"Ashton even wrote a macro for Jeff that automated that one task. Jeff didn’t want to get caught, so he refused to install it. They weren’t on speaking terms after that. It was awkward." My favourite quote.

Upvoted because that's good code reuse in the scenario that you only want to store a default value, and I can see why you replied to the commenter with it. It doesn't necessarily work so well in the scenario where you want to perform some

MSR have had a few profitable collaborations with their .net language implementors. The generics system in c# for example was originally developed by Don Syme (who also worked on f#) and Andrew Kennedy. I think once you've had a good exam

Thanks for the correction. I admit I've not fiddled with Haskell's equivalents to Active Patterns to any great extent - as since I mention in the original comment I didn't hugely see the motivation in that context. I really only mentioned

I can appreciate some of these concerns - though the ability to run under mono ameliorates them for me. If you want a language aiming for a similar functional + oop position but don't want to touch Microsoft stuff then Scala might be worth

I've been enjoying using it for both some personal and commercial projects. Points I've noted myself that aren't really discussed so much in the usual analysis, or maybe they're the 'small print': 1. Active Patterns are incredibly useful.

Whats more interesting for me, is the way that a lot of news stories are specific examples of interesting things ripped out of the odd bit of research. For example, once the Forbes 400 list has been compiled you could pretty much auto-gene
