Except APC doesn't actually serialize anything except for objects. Arrays and scalar types are directly memcpy'ed in and out of the APC user cache. But this author is extremely confused. I think he may have confused APC with Memcache here.

It seems to me that the problem is more squatters like this guy.

Ah, but we actually do. Especially when a commit comes from someone new or someone who doesn't normally commit to that part of the code. In order to sneak a malicious commit through, you would need to hijack the account of a user that norma

Correct, checking for direct repository modification isn't very hard, even with Subversion. What took a little longer was to go through and make sure there wasn't a sophisticated attack hidden in a normal commit somewhere. Hard to sneak one

So a Java double by default allows extended precision beyond the actual double precision the type implies? I can see why it is useful for certain apps to have this capability, and it makes the problem for Java much like the problem for gcc

by rll 16y ago
Well, the underlying JVM is written in C (C++ actually) along with a bunch of assembly. I figured this needs to be fixed at the JVM level and as such the fix might very well be a single "volatile" addition like it was for PHP.

This particular value is specific to the Java implementation. Ruby has very similar code to PHP though, so a slight variation of the value may trigger it. You also have to be on a platform that actually has an x87, of course.

I have a feeling we will see this come up in more places. When we fixed the code for PHP we saw very similar code in a lot of other projects.

Wow, a blog post that doesn't blame me for something. That's a first. :) He has a point about this code being used everywhere though. When we figured out what caused this we did a quick search to see how other people who use this same cod

Yeah, I looked at that too, but we don't quite have the number of servers that Twitter does. :) The primary goal was to get the deploy sequence and cache management right.

by rll 16y ago
I'd say they tend not to be handled well in most deployment mechanisms regardless of the language because all moderately complex systems are going to have multiple levels of caching that need to be taken into account when you are trying to

Honestly I think the best way is to just come out here if you are able to. Grab a room from AirBNB and stay for a month or two. Figure out what you like to do, then find the companies that do that and tell them you are really interested i

Well, the choice was between having 'z'++ go to 'aa' vs. '{'. In most cases when you are comparing strings you want to do so alphabetically, not by their underlying character code. As mentioned in the thread there, Perl made the same deci

The pinups have nothing to do with the PHP Android project. I was just explaining where the elephant came from. Vincent happens to also like drawing scantily clad women, but the PHP Android project is just using the elephant.

Ah, but it is not an elephant, it is an éléPHPant. :) It was never intended to be a PHP logo, but there is this crazy talented designer in France named Vincent Pontier who thought the letters PHP looked like an elephant. Watch the short vi
