I think this is actually a better analogy than debt (notice that equity and debt are on the same side of the ledger); just as future valuation of the company is uncertain, so may also be the business value of the quick hack. I.e. in the sam

People probably mistook "by that time" as "at that time" instead of "since", which was what you meant. Also, use "has been" instead of "is", as the open-sourcing happened sometime in the pas

Garbage incinerators with CO2 capture and geological storage; that is a net CO2-negative process, and you can recover energy in the form of domestic heating, too. This is not a fantasy technology; everything needed to do this already exists

Off-topic, but still: There are several frightening realistic aspects with that series, but the key premise - that the U.K. would willingly allow Russia to take control over one of its energy sources - is so utterly bonkers that it spoils t

If the environment variable HISTCONTROL contains the keyword ignorespace, then commands starting with a space won't be saved in the history list; usable in situations like this. (Of course, the command will be visible in the process li

Maybe not in the U.S., but in Norway, as part of getting the driver's license, you'll have to take an ice driving course, where, amongst other things, a dummy is swung at your car while driving on an oiled lane in 30 mph. (It is p

Is the incident with the matching checksum that he mentions because APFS only checksum metadata (which are on preallocated space on the image), or is it his own checksum (say sha1sum), I wonder? It seems strange that the filesystem driver w

Techies get treated well probably equals higher employee retention, again leading to higher institutional memory, meaning bugs have a chance of actually getting fixed. More happiness probably also correlates with more creativity, meaning th

You may say this in jest, but RyanAir actually applied for permission to do flights with unseated passengers. Fortunately, we still have an aviation authority (in Norway) wise enough to throw it out, sneering.

But the society need not be based on internal oppression, to be an adversary to us: I don't think the kingdom of Castille in 1492 necessarily was a beacon of stability and lack of conflict; yet it financed an expedition westwards.

Not even that: The Norwegian government plans to connect the garbage incinerator at Klementsrud to a CO2 capture station, pressurize it, and ship it to an abandoned gas field for storage. And since the capacity of the storage site is so muc

At my previous work, we attempted to find the correlation between faulty code and the time of commit in the version control. Most bugs were written after 14:00. (And no: we didn't check-in all code at the end of the day).

These kind of studies tend to be riddled with methological errors. For instance, one of them found (as usual) that autumn-borns had lower grades than spring-borns. However, once adjusting for the parent's education level, the results w

Being a European, I find this very... surreal. It is often considered that our labor regulations and unions encumbers businesses, but when I read stories like this I can't help thinking that it's actually the other way around.
