This is definitely wrong - legally and morally. I have had companies show me snippets of their code base to analyze and work on which is fine. Gives me a better feel about how competent to development team is rather than isolated puzzles an

Agreed. Google apps are no where near Microsoft's suite in terms of maturity and capability - not just Excel. This article assumes that Google apps was once at a point on-par with Microsoft office when it never was.

With PHP you can enter the wonderful (and lucrative) world of Wordpress templating, plugins and/or maintenance. Like the other post suggested you will be burnt out if you freelance while working full-time so balance your freelance work

When I had an analyst job straight out of school I found myself collaborating and getting involved with a lot of different projects to get my programming 'fix'. Once I become a full-time developer those side-projects slowly vanish

So if you replicated their special and custom 'platform' in Ruby or Python and it exceeded PHP's performance by miles what would their reasoning for continuing to use PHP be?
