Elon Musk's stated goal with Tesla is to bring electric cars to the masses. To do this, the price has to come down, and the price only comes down with volume, and you can't build the volume for a mass car from scratch without a lo

What interested me is the discussion about naming (re-use of callback, "errback", "Failure" etc.). That sort of discussion quite often smacks of bike-shedding, but Guido's points here made me release how clear and s

Exactly. I enjoyed the fairly well supported counter-arguments to the ideas. Inevitably it isn't going to be quite as good as it appears initially, and open debate is how consensus is reached, but he devalues the whole argument by lay

Never under-estimate how much more helpful it can be to have something in a standard library. I do a lot of embedded development, and we have Python scripts all over the place on various embedded targets to perform all sorts of functions. O

I'm always amused by the slight fear that web developers treat C with (and even more so by comments like "does anyone actually write anything in C/C++ any more?"[1]), although I do appreciate the compliment that us embed

The way I see it, instead of basing a decision on what's currently fashionable, they've gone for some empirical data and have actually conducted an experiment. Sure this is a fairly simplistic first step, but so should all first s

I'm not sure you should draw any meaning at all from this, whether technical or philosophical. JPEG is an image specific compression format, and works by removing visually insignificant detail. Applying the same system blindly to an un

Surely disguising your search box as the browser's search box is merely adding to the confusion? Also, presumably it isn't always identical to the browser search box - you're going to have trouble with all combinations of browsers and colou

Good point - I suppose I hadn't considered it like that. I tend to happily commit to my feature branch on SVN and then make sure that the log message is good when I merge to trunk. Incidentally you can edit previous log messages in SVN, it'

Errr, no - while that's what you see in the directory tree, that's not how it's done internally. SVN has a data model where multiple paths in the repo tree can point to the same underlying file object, so a branch requires no file copies, j

He compares it to SVN, but makes a classic error. In SVN branches and commits are just as cheap as in git (albeit marginally slower to create usually). It's the merges that are expensive. It's there that git wins, with it's better underst

You're right except that by 'kinda sucks' you actually mean that it doesn't support base station hand off at all. You can kind of simulate one ubiquitous wifi network by using the same SSID everywhere. Then, when a user moves out of range o

However much current you can draw over your USB socket, it's still only 5V. Many devices want a (far) higher voltage than that for charging or powering themselves. A quick glance at my laptop PSU shows 20V, presumably related to the voltage

My problem with this article is the use of the word 'flaw' to describe the potential pitfalls of programming in C. Use of that word seems to imply that these things are accidental, and maybe if it had been better designed the problems would
