I would love for a widespread PalmOS revival! I'm not talking so much about the devices, as the whole experience. The exquisite UI, the distraction-free atmosphere, the lack of ads and dark patterns like tracking, the elegant simplici

We are generally on the same page, and your thoughtful reply got my upvote. I bet we'd agree good UI derives from familiar concepts and offers affordance. You don't need to be technical to have a decent idea of what "Unliste

This statement in the YouTube example is unfair: "Users may expect that the video has proper access control restrictions" The selection is clearly labeled as "Unlisted", which I find pretty easy to understand. It'

I'm stealing your thread to ask a question: How would you explain what an API Client is to someone who's never used one before, and has always just consumed/produced/tested API's the old-fashioned way? Is it basical

This is an old-man rant, but the first time I saw Unicode I felt like I was looking at a train wreck coming from a long way off. It has too many edge cases, footguns and unintuitive artifacts like this. I wish we constrained its use to on

It's more important to have people who actively "own" each piece of the infrastructure, and are intimately familiar with it, the rationales, the tradeoffs, etc. Then when new knowledge/technology/idle cycles come al

Yes! That phenomenon drives me crazy. I used to be able to use a computer at warp speed by staying ahead of its responses with chains of rapid keyboard shortcuts etc. Now it's like I'm trying to sride through molasses.

I had a similar problem back in 2018, though at a smaller scale. I wrote a quick-and-dirty program that reads the authoritative list of all AWS IP ranges from https://ip-ranges.amazonaws.com/ip-ranges.json (more about that

Don't stop there! If Amazon sues you, demand a jury trial and win a carve-out making it legal to unlock DRM you own.

I have definitely opened the wrong app by accident on a smartphone - super easy to tap the wrong thing in a variety of situations (grasping at an awkward angle to snap a photo, pocket taps, etc).

This is why I don't want auto-updates in most of the things I own. It's just a crutch for manufacturers to ship half-baked products, and an attack vector for the next generation of shitty engineers they hire to damage my property.

I realize not everyone will care about this, but I find the naming for these WSL-like subsystems is confusingly backwards. i.e. It should have been Linux Subsystem for Windows, or Window's Subsystem for [Linux | FreeBSD | etc].

Array element accesses are bounds-checked in C# for safety. But, that means that there's performance impact... Why don't we have hardware support for this yet? (i.e. CPU instructions that are bounds-aware?) Edit: Do we? https:
