I'm missing a tool like FARR "Find And Run Robot", to start any program. But I guess Windows Vista and 7 have that now in the start menu. Still FARR has a lot more features. Also, AutoHotkey changed my life! http://www.donationcoder.com/So

As an academic field, economics is completely underperforming. It's no suprise interesting research comes from other areas, such as physics in this case.

Sigh, what you dismiss as cocktail-party Freudianism is social psychology that you fail to understand. You are taking the idea of sexual motivation too directly. Sexual motivation underlies status awareness, which in turn drives ambition. S

Slightly tangent: The question if humans are inherently lazy or not is wrong. To understand motivation you need to grasp back to evolutionary principles. People work hard to ensure procreative success, but will spare energy when possible. I

It's speculation with logic. You don't always need make measurements to get accurate conclusions. The points in this article sound logical to me and also useful. Dismissing them as "pure speculation" does not seem justified.

In the ideal case you find the correct pivot immediately, but in worst case you will have to sort the whole list. Thus O(n) = n log n.

There is no purpose in life obviously, so you have to make something up: I chose enjoying life (hedonistic) and being successful in my field (AI). Strangely I don't feel like helping others, even though I know I should. May be it's because

I liked the question and after thinking hard about potential algorithms, I came to a different conclusion: - In general for data sets of this size, you don't want anything more then a linear algorithm or less preferably. - Also, because a m

Thanks for this, I usually listen to deep house/trance, but this is really relaxing.. I especially like the brown/red noise with oscillation.

What Apple does is no mystery. If you really want to know how to do good design delve into design methodology; it's the basis of the study Industrial Design. One of the key factors is creating a rigorous set of criteria for your product, in

Skype voice encryption is really though, meaning that agencies can't tap Skype. Change the machinecode of a program on your own pc is something entirely different.

Acting passive-aggressive is not something you do very consciously. I must admit I'm guilty of it and if it really comes from fear of embarrassment or making mistakes then that is a real problem. But I think passive-aggresiveness can also b

Don't get me wrong, a correct packing algorithm for this is far from trivial! What would you say is more important: minimizing the amount of slots to move or the number of VM's?

Okay, you have two conflicting criteria: Spreading load and minimizing VM movements: Algorithm A: Always choose the server with the most slots free spreads the load most equally without moving VM's. (Assuming servers are equal in capacity.

Wait, this is very simple: Always pick the server with the most slots open. Only when no server has enough space to accomodate the next machine, but together they have enough space, should you apply a packing algorithm.
