That's fair. I can see how an ebike might encourage people to ride them more compared to owning a regular bike and never using it!

In Japan almost everyone uses non electric fixed gear bikes and it seems to work okay. They are dirt cheap too (under $100)

or a escooter or one of those things you just stand on and it moves? The main reason to ride a bike nowadays is for pleasure or exercise and a ebike defeats both.

People who drive often find basic driving "automatic"; if you still need to be vigilant, maybe even hypervigilant because you're not personally driving the car, what's the advantage?

Kyoto has this sorted. It's on a grid system, and every horizontal and vertical street has a name. When giving full addresses it is done like so 京都市中京区堀川通御池西下る西三坊堀川町521番地 Very long! 京都市 (Kyoto city) 中京区 (district/ward) 堀川通 (vertic

One legged squats are not hard though (mostly balance) they just look hard. A 1xBW squat is beginner level.

I wrote a bookmark manager in 2005-ish using security-conscious PHP, and it still works great. I rewrote it in React for fun and not only is it totally out of date, but Github's dependabot has sent me probably 200+ security advisories

Basically npm fell heavily behind in development so people switched to yarn; it's back to npm now. This is over a timescale of 10 years or so.

This used to be confined to web dev, and my backend job was happily tinkering away at 15+ year old code written in stable languages and frameworks, deployed via RPM/Puppet. But we took on too many graduates and now suddenly everything

This is just hype, just like with React years ago. There is no "one true way forward" Besides, HTMX is just HTML with JS on top which devs have been doing for literally 20 years. Rails had that kind of functionality in 2005 becaus

>So, here’s a question - when were you last excited for a new phone? Well, I mean really excited? Last year when I bought a Galaxy Fold4. I would say that is the opposite of boring, it's freaking cool!

That was true like 100 years ago, but nowadays katakana words are extremely popular and increasingly used over their Sinitic counterparts, so I feel it's a valid argument. Also it's not uncommon for words like ろ過(濾過)to be written

I don't think (for me) chinese or english reading is particularly different. In both cases you're scanning whole blocks (words, phrases) at a time. Sometimes I feel like I read Chinese slower purely because of how dense it is.

I feel like Japanese strikes the right balance, no ugly oversimplified characters but making common kanji easier to write for children (國→国、櫻→桜) For example 竜 is a fairly common simplification of 龍 and imo not nearly as ugly

Sorry, I used the term incorrectly. I'm not suggesting that graffiti increases crime, only that the presence of graffiti encourages more graffiti. I live in Japan which is usually free of litter, put a few empty beer cans on the floor

Broken window theory. Once a few things have graffiti, it will quickly proliferate including stuff that isn't exactly aesthetic.

Even this site just did not impress me. I feel like it's all stuff I could easily imagine myself. True creativity is someone with a unique mind creating something you would never had thought of.
