There was a HN post three years ago on how to declare someone as dead [0]. Granted, this was not the decision of a machine but like in OP's story, it's a one-way road with no way to "undo" or at least "sudo kill -9&

The quote at the end is meant as a joke but it's interesting how often this is true. A lot of magic tricks rely on being prepared for different outcomes, while often trying for the least likely one first. This unlikely outcome happens

This also relies on a container DIV (".overlay"). So Flexbox doesn't help here.

Unfortunately, this page does not give a solution to a long-standing centering problem I've had: Given a single DIV of unknown width and height, how do I center it in the middle of the screen (floating, i.e. fixed)? Note the "sing

The big trend in the airline industry is to customize prices and availabilities to each individual request. Your location (IP address), your frequent flyer status (if logged in), the competitor's current prices, the distribution channe

It's Go's simplicity that really struck a nerve with me. I've been coding for over 30 years now (Basic, ASM, C/C++, Java, Python, PHP, JS, Clojure) and with Go, I just love how everything is laid out for you: idiomatic G

SEEKING WORK - remote from Berlin, Germany, part-time I'm a full-stack web developer with close to 30 years of programming experience. Previously, I've developed large, mission-critical systems for major airlines and, as a technic

I believe it's crowdsourced. There are many items I eat that they don't have in their database. The app allows you to submit the nutrition info to their database and it gets recognized afterwards. MyFitnessPal is very popular. The

A friend of mine used to work for one of these paid content agencies. Her job was to set up a few Wordpress blogs a day while writers filled them with content. Apparently, among their clients were lots of large companies. It seems, though,

My co-founder and I have a combined 20+ years of experience in the airline software industry. When we set out to start our own business, it was clear that we were not going to sell to airlines. Too many legacy systems, too much historically

One of my music videos on YouTube is blocked in Germany with a note that it infringes copyright. I wrote the music and the lyrics myself. I shot the video myself. I'm the sole copyright owner. The appeal didn't lead anywhere. It was detecte

Looking at this from my office in Berlin, I thought "wow, they're even using GeoIP and some clever compositing to adjust the background to wherever I am."

I don't understand this. Upload your image to a (micro)stock agency to sell it, then see how much it is really worth, i.e. how much people will pay for it in the free market. (Value and production cost are two very different things.) But ma

I got sick a few times from street-vendor food in 3rd world countries. It turned out that they often reuse oil for too long. I now avoid deep-fried food, dirty or tap water, and things like ice-cream. I've been fine on my travels since.

If you would like to know more about what made the Albrecht brothers' stores so successful, you should read Dieter Brandes's book. It think the English version is this one: http://www.amazon.com/Bare-Essentials-ALDI-Way-Retailing/dp/...
