Interestingly enough though... FoxConn says in the email replies that they DONT SUPPORT Linux. However, they have code specifically written for it. Strange, even if it isn't deliberate sabotage.

The last statement, "As software and hardware engineers, if our defaults put users in an unsafe situation, where their credit and savings are placed at risk, then we’ve failed them, and we’ve acted unethically." is excellent. Unfortunately,

I actually meant relaunching Vista with a new brand (I mean, in many cases each release of OS X - esp the last ~2 releases is essentially aservice pack - updated kernel, some UI tweaks and some extra hangon apps and it works great giving it

Tie this however with the ads I saw in the NY Subway yesterday, advertising features of Vista and taglined with: "Microsoft Vista - Now with Service Pack 1!" Unfortunately, here's how I see it: - People who are smart enough to know WTF a Se

There's a reason they're avoiding the giants. They can knock out the little guys who can't mount much of a defense, and then use it as a precedent to go after bigger fish who can give them hard cold cash. Amazon would pony up the big guns

It's a tough situation; I was in a similar circumstance including parents salaries disqualifying me for financial aid (my father passed away a month before I started college, but the lookback period for financial aid is 3 years of income.

There is some ... flawed arguments here. Specifically the article extorts that you should always use mysql_pconnect because "unique connections simply don't scale". This will provide performance improvements in certain situations, but once

Oh, and stuff like Lego Mindstorms might also be just the thing to make it happen. One of the coolest experiences I had as a kid was when I was about 8 or 9 (it was 1987, because I recall everyone was also playing Faerie Tale Adventure: ht

This may be worth considering, as far as not forcing it upon them. I learned to code as a kid not from my parents teaching me, but from my dad buying a Vic20 and then a Commodore 64 (I ended up learning on the 64, but a few years later when

Security has it's place. There are certainly gobs of value to having a security focused platform, that benefits even those who view it as a bunch of "masturbating monkeys". But in Linus' defense, it's not like the Linux platform has ever b

Well, in particular he states two things that are worth noting: 1) You have to hand code all your interfaces. The SDK uses Interface Builder, which lets you 'draw' your UI similar to building a normal Mac app. 2) He's using a Javascript i

It also uses Python for it's scripting if I recall correctly, which is pretty cool. Especially as the guys who end up learning this don't end up learning a set of skills only useful for Blender.

I'll really try to take that whole rant with a grain of salt. Yes, I realize I'm locked into "apple's DRM" - if I buy from the iTunes store. I buy from Amazon MP3, or I rip CDs (those are the 3 ways to get music on my iPhone, right? ;)) to

The other point of course is that if you learn PHP, you've only learned a tool to build websites. Python is a pretty multipurpose tool that happens to have the ability to build web applications. (And Ruby as well)

It's incredibly easy to learn & use - what I've always liked about it is that I spend very little time thinking about how to accomplish a task in Python. In addition, Python has solid support for object oriented programming which I can'

As a general rule, if you have a choice, I would recommend learning Python (Pylons or Django, I prefer Pylons for it's looser coupling) or Ruby + Rails. While PHP is used all over the place, if you want to keep your sanity you're better off

I don't know about Rails (It's DB library is ActiveRecord, if I recall names correctly) but SQLAlchemy which is Python's big ORM, has support in it for sharding and similar partitioning, etc. When we built sketchcast.com sharding was on the
