Very true: "Be skeptical." Also very true: "Another issue is dealing with drift over time, as errors in estimation build up and if you're scanning the same area your model will start to drift." Apple Developer Vide

I know this is late: but you get what I'm talking about: You could decompose movements over different frequencies ("Fractal Self Similarity) and test for some sort of state wise relationship between recent micro and macro movemen

This is why I love HNs: When people make stupid snarky comments, they get a response. BTW: jaf12duke - I'm finally doing it. I'm hoping to start at the Flatiron school this month after switching from finance. The 4 reasons you lis

Any thoughts on how to implement a channel trading algorithm?

No. That's another trading method. I know what you are talking about there too, but that's not how I see the strategy working. What I found in my research is that the statistical analysis being done on markets is an approximation

I posted this on topal too, but I want to get your opinions also: I studied a bit of market theory in college and learned about channel trading. The Efficient Market Hypothesis is just that - a "Hypothesis" - not a law. Plenty of

I was lucky enough to learn about this in high school - Andover. I forget the speakers name but he gave the speech between 2001 - 2005 (I can't remember). It was an incredible speech about Mutually Assured Destruction and how the theor

That isn't true all the time. Goldman Sachs uses an even "worse" review process. It's called a 360 review: your employees that report under you, co-workers at the same management level and your managers all rate you. The

Even better grab a random Linus response to Linux kernel commits and add it as a comment. Example: [GitUser], SHUT THE FUCK UP! It's a bug alright - in the [GitRepo]. How long have you been a maintainer? And you still haven't l

For me, they are really good on the low end. I love the fact that they offer a $5 per month instance size. Plus, since I joined during the beta period I get unlimited bandwidth for free. This beats the $15 per month AWS instance sizes or th

I was paraphrasing. Apple stopped doing giving carriers access with iOS 5. http://theweek.com/article/index/222053/the-carrier-iq-cellp... Right now it just collects the data for traffic estimates. http:&#x

My main point is that Apple is looking to push sensor data up the stack via new APIs in an energy efficient manner by reusing / repurposing components. True - I don't work for Apple. But I've sampled most "context aware&

Very true. I wasn't even aware of that part of the Settings app until I started developing. Apple should at least allow developers to "deep link" into the settings screen to remove that friction.

@tsycho is right. I want to provide a little more "context" to this comment. This is hacker news after all. As an aside and shout out: @willvarfar's demo reminds me of Jer Thorp's talk from a TedX a couple of years back

@cali: I completely agree with your points. @InclinedPlane is missing the main argument. Here is my take: TLDR: Computing needs an existential crisis before current programming zeitgeist is replaced. Until then, we need to encourage as ma

Sooo true. And although programming is fun, it's not necessarily how a person might chose to spend their leisure time. As tomphoolery alluded to, maybe the problem is that our society as a whole gives too much credit to how we live ou
