...and if you’re creating a new class library today, you also need to understand how UWP and .NET 5 fit into the picture! I’m not complaining too much, they are intentionally addressing this fragmentation, but it’s a real mess for newcomers

.NET Native is an absolute nightmare in practice. Glacial compile times (I’ve heard many people complain that their Azure DevOps CI times out after an hour), and so many bugs that you only discover at runtime. I gave up on .NET Native after

Seems like you can just call both UseWindowsService() and UseSystemd(), they will no-op if called on the wrong platform. Personally I think I'd rather split Linux+Windows into thin OS-specific projects, but I haven't tried that. A

I really don't understand Microsoft's pricing model for Visual Studio. In theory, it's just price discrimination; put features that are only valuable to enterprise customers in the $6k/year version, and profit. But then

It wasn't _just_ the sandboxing. It took an unreasonably long time for MS to loosen restrictions on "sideloading" (read: distributing sandboxed apps outside of the Microsoft Store), and the deployment story for line-of-busine

That makes a lot of sense - I think making signing easier should be the goal, not removing signing requirements entirely. Part of my frustration comes from this paradox: it's harder than it used to be to share a native application with

Yep! I've been using the 6th edition recently, it's great for understanding the principles of UWP development. It's still remarkably useful for a book that was published in 2013, but we are probably overdue for a "versio

I strongly, strongly disagree. The trackpad on my SB2 is terrible compared to the one on my MBP. It’s much smaller, two-finger right-click is unreliable, and the motion feels worse. Along with the glossy screen it’s my main complaint about
