Apple has an advantage here in that the difference between iOS and OS X is smaller than that between Windows and Windows Mobile, or Android and Chrome OS. Apple is also moving ahead now that they are adding mobile features learned from iPad

Finally the pain of collaboration on LaTeX text due to installation differences will be gone! Kudos!

The beauty of App Engine is that they bill based on CPU time. EC2 bills you based on wall clock time. Huge difference.

You can test this with relatively large files. If a 100mb file finishes syncing to Dropbox within seconds over a slow DSL, you can be pretty sure that someone has already uploaded a copy there before you do.

Good news everyone: embedding TrueType/OpenType fonts works in iOS 4.2 Mobile Safari too!

Oh by the way, one more thing: if you supply https://foo.com instead of http://foo.com to App Engine you'll get completely different identity back as a result. This is just pure fun.

Not if the provider implements delegation properly. The identity string returned should be http://jerf.org in this case. The catch, however, is that many providers screw the identity up. For example I set up a page at http://foo.com wit

If the goal is to fetch as many URLs as possible, the best bet seems to be using async epoll to simultaneously fetch tens of thousands links. Processes/threads consumes too much memory to be viable.

As it has been said before, ClickToFlash pretends to be a Flash plugin itself. This will send wrong signals to web developers about the installation base of Flash. Also, YouTube's HTML5 does not cover all videos (esp. those with ads). Insta

Is there any way to open PDF in Chrome but use Preview.app to render it (like in Safari)? I guess most likely it's not possible...

This is where one of the few cases Chrome is aiming at cross-platform support at the cost of reusing native functionalities. Every OS X and most Linux desktop distros are capable of rendering PDF natively. Personally I think OS X default PD

It's quite a decent and neat feature if you have to read a lot of PDF's (i.e. academic paper hunting): you can quickly scan through the PDF opened in your browser and decide if you want to actually keep it. Otherwise the PDF will just be do

Is it just me, or is there anyone else on OS X thinks the rendering of the default Preview.app is so much better than Chrome? One of the few reasons I constantly bounce between Safari and Chrome is the ability to render PDF beautifully. I h

Papers are, as the name implies, intended to print on dead trees. At least in the academia world you'd like to be published. PDF is the (only?) solution that allows dot-perfect control on paper. No web technology currently addresses this is
