I've finished 3 novels, and one remains half-written. My downfall is always the world building - I often find it's more fun daydreaming the world rather than having to deal with cantankerous characters who refuse to go where the p

I agree. When I started to treat my writing endeavours as a hobby rather than as a path to fame, glory, riches and world domination, I also started to enjoy the writing process a lot more. Nowadays I only write when I want to write, and I o

The alternative, of course, is when a plausible person expresses an implausible-sounding idea which turns out to be, well, wrong. For instance when Noam Chomsky presented his theory of Universal Grammar[1] which managed to impede and derail

That was a fun presentation - I now want a tool which does that for me, but does it for everything: documents on my computer, files saved to cloud storage, lists written in notebooks, etc. I started working on a personal project a couple of

Have to say I was surprised when I saw Michael Lyons's name pop up as a candidate for Nominet chairman. I went searching and found this The Register article[1] about a report he did for Nominet on their future governance and operations

I created this effect using Javascript. There's no AfterEffects video embedded somewhere in the code. There's no SVG involved in creating the effect. No GSAP to animate the text, or the gradient. Enjoy!

Same here. I've used Svelte on two reasonably hefty personal project sites[1][2] and was pleasantly surprised by how easy they were to build and (now) maintain. The one issue I had with Svelte was Sapper - I didn't get on with it

I agree with this. As much as I like the look of these coding lessons (I am easily distracted by the Shiny), when it comes to learning I find it much better to type out and run the code locally as I follow along with the lesson. A static pr

I'm surprised by the (lack of) choices made in the article. jQuery is almost 15 years old; Moment is only 9. Missing are such libraries as Prototype.js, Dojo, MooTools, Underscore, YUI, and (my favourite) Modernizr.
