I've realised what I really miss: Being able to change my own desktop, including its entire behaviour, was incredible. I first found this enjoyment when running TkDesk[1] [1] http://tkdesk.sourceforge.net/

Nice to see this. Some of these, including this one[1] are from my desktop. I miss KDE now I'm on Windows all the time. [1] http://www.digibarn.com/collections/screenshots/KDE%202-x/kd...

I left when I didn't like the direction any more, somewhere after 3. Nothing against the team, almost everyone was absolutely brilliant, it just wasn't going where I wanted it to.

My personal laptop has a 256GB SSD as OS/apps drive. I treat this as expendable. I have replaced the DVD drive with a 1TB SSHD. This is my 'storage' drive. There's a directory with stuff I need to keep, which is all on D

I see this all the time. They accept it and then when you go to log in, it fails. I usually try chopping it down to 32, 30, 24, 20, ... until I hit a match.

If your source media is FLAC (which is a good way to store 'source' material, that you might lossy-encode later) then being able to just stream that without any encoding step is handy. Maybe you wouldn't do this if you were c

My email is handled by Google Apps for Business, and I just use e.g. dropbox@hemsley.cc or facebook@hemsley.cc - and have everything come to my real mailbox. Nothing to set up when I want to sign up for a new site. LastPass stores the diffe

The 'winner' is also a shill account. These 'auctions' are there to make it look like real people are winning at low prices. Proof that this fools people easily can be seen in the credulous linked article.

I loaded this on a 4g connection and it took 14 seconds from click to progress bar disappearing. AMP talks about sub second load times on mobile. What might be in the way of that being realised?

I've often been at the start of a project and campaigned to have undo support baked in at the start. To me, it's not one of those features you should leave until when it's needed, as it affects the design of the entire system

You can do 'proper' OO, unit tests, and dependency injection with VB6, it's just not as easy as it could be, and most developers didn't, partly because unit tests and dependency injection weren't as popular at the t

This isn't a better/worse comparison. It's a differentiation-on-feel-and-sound comparison. The only thing this proves is that it's now possible to replicate the feel and sound of a Stradivarius to an impressive degree. D

Anyone who's interested in X11 (the protocol) and the Ruby language should have a look at Mathieu Bouchard's incredible implementation [1] There's some quite beautiful Ruby code in there, e.g.: module X11 k = Keysymde

If you care enough about sound fidelity to buy 3x $300 headphones and have a separate amp, it's surprising you don't have a separate DAC too. Not that I'm suggesting you should be 'forced' to buy one, but a decent D
