Google is in court because they're big and have money. They also make a good effort at removing illegal content. TPB doesn't, AFAIK. Seriously, it's nice to get free stuff but then why have any laws? May as well just take what you want from

I like bootstrapping. I think it teaches you to run a business that will bring in revenue and profit, because it's your money. I think it allows you the option of scaling up, or down, as you feel is appropriate. There's much less of a "burn

That can work, for some tasks. Lookit this article for more info: http://www2.hursley.ibm.com/decimal/decifaq1.html#inexact Many languages have built-in formats for decimal data, so unless you have a really good reason (space/speed), jus

I'm guessing that he's saying binary doesn't represent all numbers properly so if you need it to be absolutely accurate, you need to have a custom data type. Making it picoseconds doesn't help. Same problem with money - it's a very bad ide

Here's a great post from Joel about exactly that. It doesn't start off like it's answering the question, but it does: http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2006/06/16.html "Watching non-programmers trying to run software companies is like w

Well, I was worried about leaping into it feet-first and the application was emerging and needed lots of massaging. So I got a contracting gig that requires 1 or 2 days a week but lets me work full-time if I need to. I choose when to work

There are ways to mitigate the risk of starting up, as well. The process of starting your own business is exceptionally rewarding. (Edit - I see you've done some of that. Maybe you're jaded with startups, I'm jaded with BigCo :)

Thanks - been a lot of work! On the lower price: have thought a little but not convinced. One problem is "price-as-signal", another is that below a certain amount it just costs you too much in payment fees, marketing and support. Also, y

I'll go fulltime when I need to. Right now I think it's healthy to not be cooped up at home all the time. It also gives me an outlet for working on other things so I don't get a numbed-brain from staring at the same stuff every day. Altho

I use the "programmer dvorak" layout. Nicer for {} etc etc, initially scary for numbers but you get used to it. All dvorak sucks for ctrl-c/v/x.
