I don’t always know which are important messages until a while later. Someone mentions a useful service or name, so I search WhatsApp to find it. Moved phones recently, iOS backup was screwed up, and I lost some great covid memes and was lo

Sure but each bit isn’t obvious before you’ve seen it. Lots of people you know would just chew the grains after boiling because that’s what we’ve always done. Every so often someone stops and thinks about trying to crush it. How many remote

If your Roomba was programmed to hurt me I’d surround myself with power cords. This looks like us so it’s easier to see how we’re threatened by it. It’s more visceral. My cats don’t care about my vacuum but if it walked and jumped their neu

I’ve wondered how extremely bright ancestors figured out the basics. Carrying water. The benefits of cooking food. How rocks or logs rolling could become a wheel. How you actually kill a large animal the first time. How to try berries in a

I’m significantly more interested in saving the planet for my child than I am in driving a car with a specific powertrain. I’m pro-BEV because it seems to be a good way to move in the right direction. I drive an ICE VW but will move as soon

Aside from whether it’s possible, it seems inevitable. Light does not experience time. There is no time between the emission and absorption of a photon.

Note apps and todo list apps. There are a million ways of thinking about personal information and no chance that we’ve explored the full space (UX, focus, features, integrations) yet. - I made one around 2007. Perfect for a niche, but there

Cloudflare in front of S3 and Google storage for me. Interesting that is so slow. I did some CF performance tuning while I had a page on HN and found tweaks improved the outcome hugely. (How to get the caching mechanism to actually properly

It’s the cost for some. If you’re rich enough you pay far less tax because you have access to an army of people whose job it is to help you do that. They leave us suckers to pay. That’s not right. I think more of people who pay their fair s

Any society whose primary mindset is competing for resources will off itself long before it gets to affect anyone else. If you don’t transcend that primitive instinct, you’re already doomed.

You think if Hillary went up against Trump, America would choose her 19 times out of 20? I’m not sure that makes the mental calculation any better than 95%. 95% is “Obama vs a dog”. Maybe in another country. Every 20 elections, Obama is bi

I said let’s think it out. That’s an invitation to consider possibilities that might work, not a declaration that I’ve found the perfect example. Brainstorm, not argue. But hey, argue gets your rocks off, go right ahead. Feel smarter pointi

My money is on e.g. Alibaba eventually doing the same to Amazon. One of them has a market that provides an obvious cost leadership advantage.

I never mentioned bulk goods. I mentioned items that are time sensitive. Most e-commerce is latency sensitive. I recently started getting groceries on an hour delivery. It’s a game changer. Amazon could probably power a network like that by

Let’s think it out (as in: add your thoughts). If it’s for goods, you don’t need a human size pod. You can scale pods to a size that represents goods that make sense to transport quickly. Obviously you want benefits that come from standardi

Very good chance most of the money is made from very few people. If you got a cut of money from advertisers targeting you, my guess is it’s be quite a bit over 5 bucks. Especially in an election year.

Serving from S3 with Cloudflare adds tiny marginal cost to both of those companies. I moved a few static sites to that setup. Cost is in compute, storage, etc. not hosting static pages.
