I'd like to see something about dependency and package management here.

Now come on. Oracle and PostgreSQL and MySQL and the others all overlap a lot, but there's one thing that Oracle does much better than any of the others. It makes money for the Oracle Corporation!

Yeah, especially with those two! "My mentors were Steve Jobs and Larry Ellison." Who wouldn't want to be able to say that?

I profoundly agree and note that voting (at least in any reasonably-sized electorate) is an inherently irrational act, and so the barrier to good judgment is high. It's inherently irrational because one's vote will almost certainl

Indeed. It's the best (shittiest) way to deploy code on as many people's desktops as possible.

Difficult to machine, though, I'd expect, being among the hardest of all known substances (the moissanite polymorph being just a bit softer than diamond, at a Mohs scale hardness of 9.5.)

I've been diagnosed with AD/HD. Eventually I moved into sales engineering. It's been great. You leverage technical skills but get to talk to new people all the time and see what kind of problems they're trying to solve.

Go to Burning Man, or a regional event. It's the canonical way. You can make some serious friendships there.

I've been taking chemistry courses, online, with some labs in person. Oregon State ($$) and Coursera. I've finished general chemistry, took a little analytic, and now I'm making my way through an organic chemistry sequence.

I bet if you gave extra cash to someone who regularly uses heroin and who "maintains", they'll put that extra cash to good use.

I moved into sales engineering - it's cool to work on the sales team, and it gives one a wider grasp of the development organization.

Blatant sales pitch: Klocwork (which I rep) is what you want. Our static analysis tool is fast enough so that your developers can run it just before a commit, but for many environments it will run when they save code, or even as they type.

I'm several paragraphs in and there is no sign of deep insight. "In simulators, work is efficient, productive, and fun; it is goal oriented, quantifiable, and successful; the player can always win." No kidding. We're on

Yeah...I like to say that I want to die by getting hit by a bus from behind. Thinking about it now I would amend the scenario to include me listening to music on headphones, so I don't hear it coming. It's good to be alive.

Only place I've ever seen the word "hamartia" (before I Googled it) was in a clue from a very, very hard crossword puzzle.

3rd party systems - since they're complex and poorly documented and don't work like they say they do, the obvious thing to do is to simulate their vagaries and test against that. Trader don't know what they want - you could s

I'm worried by the lack of package definitions in the Java source I looked at. You shouldn't be putting Java classes into the global namespace. I have to wonder what they were thinking.

The musician analogy is poorly chosen. Playing an instrument is a highly physical, hand-eye(-mouth)-coordination challenge. But mastering a platform - be it a language, a framework, a library - will help make you a much better developer, it

Paul talks about this subject like it's a breaking of the code or something, but it's just economics. If there's a commodity you can get for cheaper than other people, you stand to gain. In this case the commodity is pleasure
