Because it doesn’t actually cost less? You have to have a LOT of invocations to match the cost of the entry level 6 dollar digital ocean box. And with that you have to manage that box vs serverless you don’t have to spend engineering time (

Yeah… I have two containers running on google cloud run right now, the nextjs container cold starts an average of 1.5 seconds. The actix web rust container cold starts in 150 ms. The difference is staggering, I can’t even tell when the rust

I use it for backends that do a lot of math because the python deployment story sucks, rust is faster anyways, and I love rust (do python and js by day). It’s been so easy to bring up rust containers on serverless and they just don’t break.

You can just deploy docker containers to many of these services and the versions are pinned just like you are used to. I’m not sure what you are expecting side effects to be here

Yes, just use tippecanoe to create your tiles, and serve them up via s3 or howerver else you want. Then client side render them with maplibregl

I use it when I’m given a model by a scientist they wrote in matlab and I need to port it somewhere else to integrate with an actual system. Octave is great for testing to make sure port matches etc. I also use Octave to learn how matlab al

We do the same and haven’t had any problems mixing antd and tailwind

Yeah I don’t get it. The Axum example is pretty easy and the actix counterpart would be easier. The pavex api looks way messier, but maybe it’s cuz I came to rust as an express and flask user

To emphasize the dependency tracking part: being able to control when you want hooks to run is really powerful. Automatic isn’t always better

This is pretty much what keeps me from using it. The whole your project will be deleted in a week of no use thing is confusing to me too, As someone who has a full time job and wants to build stuff on weekends, my beta project is potentiall

Thanks for this detailed comment. I think people really misunderstand async python on web servers. Async literally only helps when you are io bound otherwise it hurts

What is flask missing? FastAPI has swagger and open api stuff but it’s not like it’s required or necessary most of the time. I use my basic flask server as the most dead simple rest API backend for my iOS apps without any issues

Python is a mess too! There is pip which works great(if you’re lucky), but then the scientific community moves to a different variant of cinda like every two months, which just isn’t necessary usually and way more complicated than just usin

I am the same way. This is where smaller companies thrive because you get exposure to more of the stack. Just have to find the right domains with interesting problems. For me that’s building analytics and visualization tools for scientific

Especially cuz it allows you to easily write web backends using its awesome scientific and statistical/data science libraries. There is no other language that lets you build web services on dynamic data calculations like that.

Agree with this wholeheartedly.. I was a hardcore c++ dev by day for 7 years straight and picking up rust was like the best thing I ever did. If anything it made me a much better c++ programmer by the end.

This is exactly why we use it. We legit don’t have time to manage more in house services and need CI. Eventually we probably move to GitHub actions but that isn’t free for orgs.

It’s definitely a bit disingenuous to call React verbose when you are comparing it to Cocoa et all.

I’m guessing you haven’t tried building something serious with SwiftUI then. Because for me React is a million times more polished than SwiftUI. I was a native dev before I got into web stuff. The Apple APIs for native GUIs are so good, but
