I guess that last paragraph shows the temptation, our wish for meaning and some meta mechanism around us beyond a couple of rocks we can see flying around. We are unable to deal with the concrete mundanity of reality. (learning how things w

No, most games are single threaded, even AAA ones. You might get this impression from a vocal minority though, "vocal" in the sense that they're the ones landing on your radar, while the technical details of other games do no

As a game dev, I agree with you. Also: all the casual observers that say "just multithread/core it! would make it so much faster!" and don't understand one bit about parallelisation problems, as if it's just a bit y

I'm sorry, Sturgeon's Law is in full effect and the current system encourages spamming out low-tier research for grants/etc.. So the bar is on a completely different metric altogether from what a normal person would expect

reminds me of the story where a chinese plastic factory created lots of small white pellets and sold them as rice, making a fortune. (might be wrong on the factory detail, but the plastic rice definitely happened)

Your assessment is definitely sufficiently true, although I would argue that, looking at how v8 essentially increases speed down to just twice the time of a comparable C program (as opposed to a magnitude or two) it is worth the convenience

I'm always impressed by some of the optimisations they find: 0aa403b649 improves readDouble/readFloat in buffers by 200-800% simply by...moving the code to plain javascript binary operations instead of the C++ runtime.
