Most of HN isn't aware of the non-BTC, non-Ponzi protocols and dapps being built right now. There are some very cool things like decentralized lending/borrowing, exchanges, cross-chain swaps, synthetics, etc. These protocols are r

For what it's worth, the M1 Macs are instant-on. Paired with an Apple Watch to unlock, I frequently open my MacBook and just stare at my background (I hide icons/menu/dock) waiting for the prompt, not realizing it's alre

Totally agree! I really hope Apple does another modern Snow Leopard type of update with no new features -- just optimizations. Although, going from Big Sur on an Intel Mac to an M1 Mac _felt_ similar -- everything is just snappy.

Correct. These places aren’t getting fiber or strong 4G/5G connections. Have you visited rural towns?

I recommend the book "Dark Matter" by Blake Crouch for a fun techno-thriller take on the idea of "alternative lives". Great read!

You can do that with ZFS too, at least for mirrored sets (i.e. RAID10). It's possible to remove a vdev, and the pool will migrate the data to the remaining vdevs.

Yes. And it has worked perfectly for me so far, as if I was still using brew on an Intel mac. People complaining that they can't do development on an M1 mac because of the lack of homebrew support either don't realize you can simp

Subreddits seem to somewhat solve this by spinning off once they hit that level of dilution (low effort content, memes, repeated questions). The 'serious' members will create a new subreddit (i.e. /r/movies > /r&

It is actually now possible to remove a vdev. It's a new feature, not sure if it works for all RAID types, but I just removed a mirror from my pool without any issue. It migrated data off that vdev and into the rest of the pool just li

Running iTerm/Terminal in Rosetta allows it to work without issue, it's the best solution until more packages work natively under ARM. Duplicate iTerm.app, right click & "Get Info", check "Open in Rosetta".

It's definitely more expensive than simply buying a DIMM, but keep in mind that is "unified" memory and is part of the SoC, and is likely much faster than any old stick of RAM you'd normally put in a laptop. That, plus t

If you compare the M1 Air and Pro, the only difference seems to be the addition of the Touchbar, 10% better battery life, and a "studio" speaker/mic on the Pro. https://www.apple.com/mac/compare/ I

For the past 7 years I run Ubuntu + ZFS with a Xeon E3 + ECC RAM + SuperMicro MoBo inside a NORCO 20-bay 4U chassis. This was a great setup for years since I needed 40TB+ and at the time of build 2TB drives were the best price per gb. Now,
