The comments and/or advice you're giving (and the tone you're using) are the type of things you say to someone before they decide to make the jump if you want them to think long and hard before making a tough decision. When you say it like

If your definition of being a rebel means not being "part of one group or another", then I would speculate that the number of "true rebels" on HN is zero.

Does it matter? Most significant discoveries have little (if any) impact on the average person's life. The importance of many discoveries can take decades to become apparent, and are little-understood when they are discovered. And if that d

It has to do with ideal line widths for reading, not with Web 2.0. Having lines that are 1600 pixels wide is a nightmare for readability.

Somewhat of an aside: if you don't believe in free will, why do you think we should live our lives like there is? It seems a bit to me like not believing in a god but taking comfort in the idea of a heaven-like place after death; or having

Instead, let's fill the front page with posts about not filling the front page with Facebook posts. Soapbox posts telling the rest of the community what to do and/or not to do are way worse. Instead of a bunch of Facebook noise, we have Fac

It's awesome when anyone can make a living doing what they choose. But for practical purposes, I think most people think of "living off their start-up" as making money from things other than an individual doing contracts/hourly work; in oth

You were doing this from a browser and not an app? Some mobile browsers disable the file upload dialog, and there's nothing the site can do to get around it. I know it works like this on iPhone (and it's a huge pain in the ass; you'd think

The "thousands" figure is part of the bullshit. Clinton did it with about 1,300 people. That is far from "thousands". They talk about this in the article. And I'm curious what your experience and understanding of how that all works is to be

Agreed, but $5 million a day is a lot for you and your family to take a vacation. It is NOTHING when the POTUS is on an international trip. Anyone who thinks that is a big number relative to what it's for is completely out of touch with rea

I don't disagree with you. I'm just not surprised. The goal of the site is definitely not to make it easy to see and understand everything that's going on and why. Features seem to be community-centric, not user-centric.

I doubt it's a bug. PG is probably just minimizing what's cached outside of the most current and/or most viewed submissions. If a user views it, then it gets cached (for awhile, at least). Just guessing though.

Typically, someone wants work done, finds someone to do it, and they agree on what's getting done and how much is going to be paid. In this case, 100% of the risk is with the developer. Maybe someone else builds it first; maybe you don't li

I don't think people pirate software because it's hard to pay for it and install it. I think they pirate it because they don't want to pay for it. Ninety-nine cent songs are one thing; $99 apps are something else entirely.
