Probably the /sigh because it looks like a great framework if the problem you're trying to solve is to build the simplest possible TODO-list app.

Who cares how fast you can iterate if your product is unusably and unfixably bad?

Dumb question: wouldn't it be more secure to use languages that are immune to C issues like buffer overflows?

The other part of this is throwing out the ORM in places where performance matters and replacing it with a simple utility, Dapper, that maps SQL to objects: http://samsaffron.com/archive/2011/03/30/How+I+learned+to+st...

I don't agree with all of the items listed, but I think JSONKit is a really nice piece of work. What would you use instead? I know there is native support for JSON handling in iOS 5, but 1) I don't know how that stacks up against JSONKit pe

...am I reading correctly that his argument for using C++/D (!) is that it's hard to remember to say this: try { mightFail(); } finally { doCleanup(); } instead of this: mightFail(); doCleanup();

If you've got all the data stored off up-front, the search should be near-instant. As-is, it's nearly unusably slow. However, if the delay is caused by hitting the network for each search result on the backend (or something along those lin

After considering Lucene, I built my in house search engine. Yeah, totally makes sense to write your own search engine instead. Or you could use Lucene and have a tiny bit of code in front of it that tacks on "~" to query terms first and

This is my problem with GC. I like simplicity. Simplicity tends to perform well, and being simple also means it has little space for problems If your use case is teaching how to implement a garbage collector vs. a refcounting system, it i

Like quanticle said, social networking. You can't say, "fuck this, I'll just integrate with myspace instead" without getting laughed out of the room. Like it or not, Facebook's the only game in town.

AFAIK, Mobile Safari does not support file uploads, so this (or any similar plugin) will not work.

"So, instead of an image-gallery app, why not make a survey software specifically targeted at, say, event attendees." Shameless plug: check out our startup, http://yorn.com , which does exactly this.

Does anyone have a link to some numbers supporting this? The article says "Top aligned labels have proven to be faster and easier to fill out than left or right aligned labels" without a citation.

It's certainly relative :) Everyone has their preferred toolsets and frameworks and of course they should use what they feel is most effective. Case in point: my shop uses very little GWT - my coworkers prefer different tools (and often so

I mentioned GWT because the linked blog post discusses some of the first baby steps toward the idea of building a real single-page client-side app, whereas GWT has been doing some real heavy lifting in that space for a long time...I'm a lit

Unlike iPhone/iTouch, iPad runs iOS 3.2, which I'm assuming includes some or all of the bugfixes that are part of 4.0. Of course this is pure speculation like the original article, though - if anyone has a detailed 3.2 and 4.0 changelist,

I've been using 4.0 on my 3G since the initial betas were released. I was hoping the GM version would address the performance issues, but no luck - I've had it installed on my phone since it was released around WWDC, so I don't think this
