Do you agree that 'problem' or 'compulsive' gambling (Wiki: "an urge to gamble continuously despite harmful negative consequences or a desire to stop") is (a) real, (b) responsible for a significant portion of

Based on some very perfunctory research: they certainly used to have a lot of users, but I get the feeling they have declined over the past ~5 years. Anecdotally: I used to use StumbleUpon, and found it fun for a while. I'm not sure wh

For whatever it's worth, I appreciated his use of English. In this case I don't think I would have had trouble parsing 'post hoc ergo propter hoc', but about half the time when someone uses the Latin phrase for a logical

It's not just the bumps, though, it's the acceleration. The car is inevitably going to speed up, slow down, and change direction, and I don't think there's any way of canceling that out. I'm almost certain I couldn&

To understand why people who disagree with you find this kind of advice frustrating, substitute some unambiguously physical, serious illness for 'depression', and re-read your comment. You need to start by convincing people that y

Here in Australia, volunteers for the political parties hand out 'how to vote cards' at polling places: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/How-to-vote_card . It's not a perfect system,[1] but it should be eno

It's a very impressive example of avoiding the sunk cost fallacy, though. I think a lot of people would be unwilling to cop that 'loss', even if they realised it would leave them better off overall. (Or perhaps more realistic

As I mentioned in another comment, it's important to note that Monty Hall is guaranteed to open a door with a goat behind it (a losing door). If he chose randomly and just happened to reveal a goat, the answer would be different.

The key is that Monty Hall is guaranteed to show you a losing door. If that weren't the case -- if he just picked one of the remaining doors at random -- then the fact that he happened to pick a losing door would count as evidence that
