Lawrence of Arabia may be the influence of the character, but the Nabataeans, of Petra fame, are surely the main influence of the Fremen. (excuse the LLM summary) Economic Foundation - Nabataeans controlled lucrative frankincense and myrrh

Parent mentioned Monte Carlo simulations, which allow you to simulate across a range possible scenario parameters and see what % result in some outcome (like a collision with Earth or the moon).

Ditto. My non-tech friends ask what benefit AI has to society and I struggle to give them concrete examples that outweigh the opportunity cost of this kind of investment in more meaningful endeavors. Let alone the downsides of an algorithmi

Fusion research has had less than than tenth of this investment, but a viable fusion reactor would have far more impact than a tenth of what Stargate will likely deliver. Not to mention efforts for mitigating climate change and ecological c

Exactly! Whatever world model LLMs have is like this crippled view through the lens of the internet. They are really like savants. It's annoying the AI companies are still touting their performance on all these metrics for domain knowl

I don't know about groundbreaking. It's just more academic questions. We already have a lot of those benchmarks, this is just a bit harder, but at this point these models are so glaringly bad at so many other areas APART from acad

The real question is why is so little of our media about climate change? Even reporting on extreme weather typically fails to mention climate change as a contributing factor in most news outlets.

I agree, but most of us here live in a democracy, and people get mad when their short term standard of living is impacted without a basic understanding of how their long term standard of living is improved. So this is a pipe dream until peo

I frequently turn notes about infrastructure, pipelines or databases into diagrams with an LLM to ground my team's understanding. The VSCode Mermaid plugin and the GH integration make this very simple to do.

Good rant. The dominant global ideology is neoliberalism AKA free market economics, which has regulatory laxness as its bedrock. That's why fixing this basic shit is an uphill slog, rather than common sense. Neoliberals look at GDP ris

Models are often wrong but sometimes useful. Models that provide answers couched in a certain level of confidence are miscalibrated when all answers are given confidently. New training paradigms attempt to better calibrate model confidence

Maybe with vanilla LLMs, but new LLM training paradigms include post-training with the explicit goal of avoiding over-confident answers to questions the LLM should not be confident about answering. So hallucination is a malfunction, just li
