I was referring to large grants from wealthy donors, which is how nonprofits operate. To be entirely revenue funded a library would have to charge gym membership prices. I don’t see people going for it. Netflix was still pretty niche in 200

   > Over the last 50 years only a single federal government has operated with a budget that didn't increase the national debt. Oh really? And who was executive then?

I’m not normally anti-sarcasm but it’s really unhelpful here.

It sounds dismal. In an economic downturn the funding would dry up when people need it most.

I don’t think that’s contrary, rather both are usually true. You have to get lucky but also be in a position to take advantage when you do.

Would you mind terribly un-flagging the above comment? Seems a bit excessive for a productive, well-intentioned thread such as this.

“Corrective upvote” as a term is pretty hilarious — makes it sound like you think my vote is the correct one that will right the previous wrong the bozo downvoter. Utter solipsism. In 30 years of community moderation on the internet, I’ve

Not sure that distinction matters? In the “guns prevent violence” framing, the pander should have been afraid of the alleged john being armed, and not attempted physical violence.

I applaud you for taking time to acknowledge the basic humanity of the situation. Calling that low value is unfortunately on-brand for this crowd.

US politics has devolved to the point where the government can no longer promote basic public health measures and we all suffer for it. It’s a fucking tragedy.

OP is probably conflating the environmentalist protestor shot in the US by cops and the numerous racial justice protestors killed by motorists, along with the incident you mentioned. Easy mistake to make.

Jesus literally told his followers to give up their worldly possessions, but… sure. He intended to give a free pass to those who came after, that hinged on a quirk of city planning that would not exist until centuries later.

This. I’m tired of the articles that act like every company has the same titles and structure. As if the absence of the word “staff” in the org chart means there’s no one doing staff-level work.

Comic Operas are a different genre, for the most part you won’t find them in the repertory for the major world operas. Gilbert and Sullivan only overlapped with the end of Verdi’s career — they were very much a retrograde move in the artist
