I self host prosody (an XMPP server) with a TURN server in my living room. With Guix System this is largely declarative, aside from the DNS records and initial user account registration (which I do on the command line). We're using it

Yes, this is what I meant. There is no single photon (or any other single object) moving across the surface of the moon. No individual thing is moving faster than the speed of light in this scenario.

Think of a sunset just before the sun appears to fall below the horizon as the length of the shadows approaches infinity. Not only shadows can move faster than light. Any projection can. Take a laser pointer and aim for the moon, then fli

> Guix started as a fork of Nix This is not actually correct. Guix only ever used a copy of the nix-daemon, because there's no point in reinventing the derivation format or the low-level implementation of functional package managem

Here is a free software animator: https://www.synfig.org/ Development is kinda slow, but this also means that it still works just as well as when I made a little short movie 15 years ago.

In the book "The Charisma Machine" they say that the name is a "cheekily intentional reference to something children love but adults are not so sure about". I think it's a good name.

My kid loves the maze activity. It actually is a lot of fun to her. While I will concede that many Sugar activities lean towards the ugly side (usually when images are involved), fun things don't need to be drenched in gaudy colors t

That's my blog post! Yes, the GHC story is also terrible (and just a tad worse than the rust story). The GHC problem is worse largely because the origins of GHC are murky. While it's still possible to get copies of the early G

I'm used to being called "insufferable" for working on free software. Still a bit harsh judgment of people who at the end of the day still produce software that you are free to use for any purpose or ignore, no? > So it&#

One thing that hasn't changed, though, is that compatibility with the Hurd is still a major goal. Sadly (but understandably) development pushes forward for Shepherd on Linux and then we aim to make it work on the Hurd, instead of lett

If you mean the Microsoft project called "GUIX": sure, it's rather restricted. Guix, however, goes out of its way to support extensions at different levels of its architecture. Not only can you extend it with channels, local

No. While the core repository (we call that a "channel") only includes free software, there are no restrictions whatsoever on what you can or cannot install with Guix. Guix makes it trivial to add third-party channels (such as no

Guix includes a copy of the nix-daemon. It's a relatively small C++ program that manages the store. We reuse it because there was no point in writing a replacement for something as low-level as the daemon. Guix compiles its package

I'd like to point out that Guix is closer to ~52,000 packages than the ~29,000, as we maintain a bunch of things in separate channels that nixpkgs includes in its monorepo (e.g. the 20+k CRAN packages). See https://hpc.guix

Software is political. It mediates countless human activities and thus establishes the routes on which we can feasibly act when computers are involved. Writing Free Software (i.e. freedom-respecting software) is a political act, and if it
