Guix is used as a package manager in HPC environments in order to deploy reproducible software environments. There's a dedicated Guix HPC project: https://guix-hpc.bordeaux.inria.fr/

There is a systemic cost: the cumulative effect of encouraging the expectation to find things on Github. It also costs time to maintain an additional remote if you want to interact with potential contributors. Using Github only to say &quo

It's a pity that this website is exclusively for repositories on Github and thus contributes to the harmful idea that free software only exists when it is on Github.

My only complaint about ido-vertical-mode is that it seems to be very slow for long lists. This is why I'm looking for an alternative. I tried helm and ivy, but both of them behave frustratingly differently compared to ido.

I mostly use `M-x shell`. One of the best features (other than the standard features of Emacs buffers) is `C-c C-p` and `C-c C-n` to jump to the previous/next prompt.

If by "derived" you mean that it is another implementation of functional package management, then you are right. But if "derived" implies that Guix is a fork, then you are mistaken. Guix is not a fork of Nix.

I don't think the distinction is helpful. Guile Scheme is in fact compiled, and the resulting binary is in ELF format. It's still bytecode for the Guile VM, but this does not allow any inference on performance.

We have Guix as a system configuration/package manager, the GNU Shepherd as an init, and the GuixSD initrd itself, all of which are written in Guile Scheme. With the GNU Hurd important parts of the OS could be written in Scheme as well

Fine grain virtualisation is pretty hackish in Linux, but it's part of the design of the Hurd. On the Hurd you can trivially virtualise the filesystem (on Linux you need FUSE for that but it doesn't go far enough), there are user
