Yes, that has been established. I wasn't suggesting otherwise; to the contrary I think they deserved it. They made major changes to the performance characteristics of these devices without disclosing what they were doing or why. Honest

To be clear it's not that they 'downgraded' battery life, it's that it throttled power draw (and by extension performance) if the phone determined that the battery could no longer reliably power the device at peak draw.

The only thing I could imagine Apple doing with regards to seeing Linux running on their mobile hardware is further engineer ways to prevent it. I'm personally hoping Apple A5 devices are able to run Linux too as my iPad 2 is 11 years

I think LGR did a pretty good video on this; it boiled down to what hardware you had and if there were good drivers available for it. Most hardware configurations did not and contributed to the well deserved reputation.

It's worth noting that Zandronum is based on a now very old version of GZDoom. If you're playing single player then GZDoom is the better choice.
