Then I owe the NSA gratitude because I've been long wishing that there was more focus in the hacker community on building distributed systems as alternatives to data silos like Facebook and Google.

Just looked at bittorrent sync and all they offer is a binary download for Linux. Thanks, but I'd rather use open source tools to handle my secure data.

IMHO KeePass is in need of a reboot. First, it's very confusing which version to use. KeePass 1.x (Classic), KeePass 2.x (Professional), or KeePassX (originally KeePass/L for Linux?). When I first tried them out, I settled on KeeP

I'm a big fan of Mozilla as well, but can Firefox Sync handle credentials other than for web? I use KeePass2 to store a lot more than just web username/passwords. Also, I like to keep my password database separate from my browser

I'm very excited to see this. I've been using KeePass2 on Linux and it's a pain to sync with my Android phone. I tried setting up OwnCloud to share the key file but even using that causes too much friction for me to be willin

If Google et al are facing major potential economic loss due to a widespread lack of confidence in the security of their data, they had better come up with a plan to combat that loss.

Is there anything analogous for personal income? That is, can I invest my income in such a way that my gross income is $0 for the year? I know mortgages are deductible, as well certain retirement savings accounts, but what about daily livin

I couldn't find any public deployments, so I was also wondering about this. On a personal deployment is the MediaGoblin branding visible? Because frankly it's not as appealing to me as, say, the Go gopher, or the Linux penguin. Be

I don't understand either. How can reinvesting corporate revenue avoid taxation? Isn't corporate income taxed regardless of whether it's put into the bank or reinvested into new ventures?

Hopefully he would become a whistleblower, but with such a bleak outcome for Snowden I can sympathize with his not wanting to.

Censorship and monitoring are a given in China. The US was supposedly a bastion of freedom with a long history of protecting individual rights.

Go is open source so anyone is free to inspect it for backdoors. I would be very surprised if Google, on behalf of the NSA, tried to sneak anything in like that. It would also be fairly obvious if it used the underlying OS's networking

That sounds great. What if there were an email client that included an email server? If families left one desktop on 24/7 they could all use it as an email server. An open source email client could also include built in PGP or OTR encr

Maybe this is the case in the US, but it's not so for the West as a whole, viz.: the hands-off French approach: http://online.wsj.com/article/SB1000142405297020474090457719...

It's quite possible to see flamewars when discussing javascript, e.g. ember vs angular, OO-style or functional, etc. Or the classic emacs vs vim. So I don't think argumentativeness is exclusive to politics and religion by any mean

This reminded me of point #2 of a comment I just read [1] on mistakes journalists make: > "Mention every possible debate on the subject, without attempting to either offer a conclusion or a new set of arguments for any of them."

At $200 a month I wonder how Soylent would compare to, say, beans and rice. If Soylent wants to market itself as an affordable product, it should be at least comparable to a home-cooked diet that can be had for $100 a month (which should al

There's a link at the bottom of the page: https://news.ycombinator.com/dmca.html I wonder how much it actually gets used. I doubt HN is a serious competitor to sites like WSJ.com.

Didn't the NSA just admit the existence of XKEYSCORE in a press release? [1] They pretty much verified much of what the Guardian had reported, while denying widespread, unchecked analyst access to data. And this blog post reveals a &qu

How is it that Xhibit has so many faces on it's About Us[1] page but they still had to hire an elancer? Did they make the iOS version and out-source Android development? 1. http://www.xhibitcorp.com/about-us

I see copyleft as a kind of parody on copyright. The name itself is a play on words. Its goal, respecting freedom, is an admirable one. Copyright's goal on the other hand is not very admirable. Copyright exists to enforce an artificial
