It seems to me that most HN users visit it regularly, and therefore new content is more important to them than search box. I like the box being on the bottom, it doesn't distract me. I think that putting it on the top would break simple aes

What struck me while reading this article, is thought that modern society will be seen as barbarian 100 years from now - it seems very likely to me that people will see imprisoning (of person with brain problems) as something cruel, similar

I'm a vimium user too, and I find gleeBox pretty interesting. The box concept is something I sometimes wish vimium had, the tab manager is also really convenient. However, default vimium's way of managing links seems better for me at the mo

It is too late for google, microsoft and facebook - their hiring processes for summer start in winter (I even know some guys who had interviews in november) and most places are taken; you can however try autumn if you want - I know that f

I'd be more than happy to hear your arguments. Perhaps I am missing some points you could show me clearly? Your original post lacked some explanation behind what you mean by word hacking itself and while at first kind of dismissed your post

While perl is certainly useful for scripting, I'd reecommend you learning python/ruby (personally I use former) - they are most universal among these 5 language; whereas js/php are good mainly for web related stuff and perl won't give you a

There are some problems with rendering this text in Chromium - words around some of the punctuation overlap. Also, I think that ESR's guide is much more informative: http://www.catb.org/~esr/faqs/hacker-howto.html The OP omits some of the

I don't think that software patents are 'controversial' among HN community - I remember reading comments to some threads about patents and they were pretty much like the results of this poll - ie. the vast majority of people expressed opini

Isn't polyphasic considered a hoax? Piotr Wozniak, though his site looks rather shitty, seems to know what he is talking about: http://www.supermemo.com/articles/polyphasic2010.htm Specifically this paragraph sums the thing up: I rece

It seems that OP don't realize fully that there is much more to language than syntax. Java's syntax is similar to C but the languages are used for entirely different purposes. I think that it could be actually more useful to choose some pro

Could you elaborate on connection between C and designing things that scale? I don't get it and I think I may be missing something. I support C too. While I don't use it everyday (actually I avoid using it) I think it is important to do som

Is this guy trolling? First two paragraphs sound to me similar to what some of my math untalented friends said about it in highschool. "Power to understand and predict" is not limited only to those who can manipulate abstract symbols - for

This may sound controversial, but isn't it true that it is somehow easier to devote your life to something meaningful when you are facing death? Purely anecdotal evidence, but it's easy for me to spend entire day on reddit when I think that

C++ and java seems to be two languages allowed in all algorithmic competitions and people are used to it. I think reasons for which C++ is the dominant one are a bit historical - for example when I started participating in those contests, a
