On Roger Federer ( http://www.worldtennismagazine.com/archives/2004 ): Every day brought fresh challenges for Paganini to keep the young firebrand’s morale high. “Roger is not a workaholic that you can hit 3,000 backhands to and he hits th

Not to mention wider society - it's difficult to countersignal that you are intrinsically driven.

I agree. I'm in data analytics.. I wonder if they would take fairly unexperienced programmers.

Interesting. I hadn't thought of that. The study also indicated a small percentage of treatments evidenced as actually harmful, so that in the end only a third of the treatments were efficacious. My own experience in a clinical setting show

Maybe they should ask their doctor, given the recent spate of articles on ineffectiveness of medical treatment: http://jama.ama-assn.org/content/294/2/218.abstract http://well.blogs.nytimes.com/2009/04/02/the-ideology-of-hea... (If so

I took the liberty of emailing you; hope you don't mind. It's quite tough to explain what the School of Info actually does, and in fact one of the first lectures I heard there was about this problem.

I learned this lesson from Go rather than chess, but I'm not sure why (having been exposed to chess for far longer).

This is just confirmation bias. Page credits "part of that training of not following rules and orders, and being self-motivated, questioning what’s going on in the world, doing things a little bit differently." As a Montessori kid myself, I

I made an abortive attempt to learn C++ by myself long ago, and was frankly scared of programming for a while because of it (was fine with BASIC, but.. a good idea of how I felt: http://www.qwantz.com/index.php?comic=1178 ). But a couple m

You've studied a cleaned-up, simplified (and likely ossified) version of economics so far. Economists analyze market power all the time, and game theory is a good suggestion. Putting it all together in macro terms is difficult, though. I th

I always wonder about this - I used to be completely touch-avoidant, and trained myself to be less so (As you can probably tell, I'm not a sales/marketing guy). I don't think I'm unnatural about it, but how can you really tell? It's only bl

I've seen this to a lesser extent comparing those who go in-state and out-of-state, but by the end of college it becomes more what you've chosen to do at In-State U. I went out-of-state, then moved back to live at home (HN helped keep me in

To my utter shock - I thought it'd be one of the last bulwarks against premed memorization. When I learned otherwise, it was sad to think that those students who flocked to non-calc physics (and floundered; the classes are of course curved)

I picked up Self-Theories after reading the excellent Mindset (which dealt with fixed vs growth mindsets). For an HNer, I would suggest you borrow Mindset but buy Self-Theories.

Last I remember, most programs could play about 12-10kyu evenly and some specially augmented ones had hit dan levels. Computer moves always looked unnatural to me, though, and you could often exploit this easily. I'd say most players are at
