I've heard of sites truncating to only use the first 8-12 characters as well. So if you are going to use lots of words, put them after a highly complex first 8 characters.

I just reset to a 22 character password, so I know that number of characters is allowable at least.

It's important, but I don't think it's crucial. I've seen a couple programmers that are really good that do not have good memories. They always have apis and cheat sheets open in their browsers they are constantly referencing, along with f

Assuming LinkedIn used SHA1 unsalted passwords and will continue to do so, and many of us do not want to delete our LinkedIn accounts, what should be the minimum number of characters we should use in our new password? 15? 20? 100? (I know

Yeah, even I, a newbie Rails programmer, going through the Agile Rails book learned how to salt. It isn't rocket science.

I think it's more terrifying today. Who would have thought a small place like North Korea kill lots and lots of Americans? It may happen indirectly, via sharing nuke technology with Iran, who is buddy-buddy with Latin American countries,

I still use it too. I like it, but it seems to be down 1 out of 3 times I try to use it, so let's just say it's 33% dead.

You have to factor in all the newbies that here all this doom and gloom about the job market in the media, and the last tidbit in the news story usually mentions "but there is a lot of growth in iPhone and Android apps". This is probably c

Good point. I took a course on business communication, and remember learning that tone is often lost in writing. You may send an email to someone in a friendly, playful mood, but it can come across as sarcastic and/or rude to the recipien

Good point. When I'm stuck and management takes a couple days to get back to me and I have nothing to do, I take advantage of this time to learn new things. Maybe I'll read the man pages for "find" and discover a few new tricks. Or I'll

One day I had an epiphany. I realized as I was programming at my computer that nobody had a freaking clue what I was actually working on. If someone asks how their low-priority project is going, I just say that I'm still working on it. T

I agree with what envex said, but would add that if you don't start doing something withing a few weeks of going through these courses, you'll forget almost everything. As they say "use it or lose it".

I never thought Brita would make the list. I've been using them since Consumer Reports gave them a good review for low-cost but effective water filtration systems. Does anyone know of a good low-cost alternative?

I got a job where we don't deal with Oracle at all, life is so much better! I'd recommend it to anyone. Eat your veggies, exercise regularly, and work in an Oracle-free workplace .... this is the secret to happiness!

And it's the wealthier kids that can afford the stuff that makes them cool. It's all about getting the wealthy to feel superior to the rest of us and pretending that wealth had nothing to do with it.

Great post, very well-balanced. One of the dumbest things I heard growing up was that to be silent is to agree with someone, I can't remember the exact quote, I think there are a few variations. So I'd see myself as a hero when someone wou
