Isnt plant communication an active field of research ? I remember reading about how plants in a field can communicate changes in environment (like a bug infestation) with one another.

It's the same for many indian languages too. "Acchamma" stands for paternal grandmother in my mother tounge. "Acchan" stands for dad and "Amma" is mom so the combination of those two is dad's mother.

PBS space time is another good channel. Their series on general theory of relativity is really nice. They try to explain it as close as possible to the real thing but still make it accessible without resorting to innacurate analogies

I never understood why these thresholds are hard thresholds in the first place. It should make sense for the reduction in benifits to reduce gradually but it's pretty rare to see a policy like that

I don't think creative types will be satisfied with reaching a local maximum. They always try to find ways to stretch what's possible by looking for completely different ways to use said tools. Just the different genres of music p

Sure it need not have the instinct built in but we could try to make it understand a viewpoint right. I believe an agi should be able to understand different view points. At least the rationale of not unnecessarily killing things. I know hu

I'm afraid of companies pushing large scale models as the end all for anything text related. Large language models are revolutionary but the last thing I want to see is everything being run through an API. I'm more interested in t

My go-to these days is Polars. You get good performance since it uses arrow in the back. Coupled that with built-in lazy evaluation and it's API design it's pretty good for me. There are some caveats you need to be aware though. I

Reading comments like this is a bummer. I am currently doing my masters with a focus on NLP. At this point I'll be pretty happy to get a job even if it just boils down to only deploying ML models. Even for such a role of companies expe

Does having a paper trail generated exactly after voting help? This is the system that's followed in India. I tried to think of ways it could fail but it seemed pretty fool proof as far as I can think. I'm pretty sure I might have

So what the Indian education system lacks is making students learn how to approach a novel problem or subject on their own. From an early age it's all about getttthe right answer through the prescribed route. There is very little room

My idea is to use make a table row into a textual description and feed it into a transformer and get a get effectively a sentence embedding. This is effectively a query embedding. Then make a couple of value embeddings for the target you ar

Ive been looking at a way to use transformer based models on tabular data. The hope is that these models have a much better contextual understanding of words. So embeddings from these models should be of better quality than just word2vec on

Hadn't come across parameter sharing in transformers. That's something I'll definitely look into. Why is it not wide spread though ? Most famous and powerful models have a huge number of parameters

Anything that can reduce the number of parameters required for a transformer is good news. Wonder if this approach can be easily plugged into the recent retrieval transformer.
