It's not though. Even though fuel to heat is vastly cheaper than electricity to cool, the winter thermal difference in a cold climate is an order of magnitude more than the summer thermal difference in a hot climate. https://

It seems like you'd need more than 1.5kW of heat in upstate new york, even for a small place (which is more than half the size of my suburban home). Also, while I agree that $40 is cheap to me, it's also an additional 10% on their

Apparently it's "free Amish wood" or "a little extra in electricity"... which, as someone who lives in a temperate area, is a stunningly low price to imagine for electric heat in somewhere cold.

Drivers consider it adversarial because it not only "takes away control" but also because it messes up their feedback loop. I'll give two examples. From a recent Toyota rental (~2024 RAV4): The lane departure system (which se

I needed to replace the 12v battery in our Tesla a few months back, and was surprised to see a protest out front. I laughed to myself, glad I had driven my Porsche to the service center instead. Thankfully, I said to myself, none of our non

That smells plausible, but from my seat as am armchair car enthusiast, it seems that foreign automakers outsource components just as often.

Ah, thanks. I saw the photo of the car with lines on it and naively assumed it was part of the restoration, not the initial problem. Of course it's not surprising that "price gouging" (or, supply and demand, whatever you want

Yeah. Most people don't have a generator because they're on the grid, and no power is not life and death for them. If it _is_ life and death, sure, get a generator.

And $600 to rent a pickup (!!) to haul a generator that looks like it would fit in the back seat of a Civic.

The most obvious way in which I think "math" and "programming" are related is the way they're taught; by repetitive performance of problem sets. I got frustrated in math for this reason; it takes a lot of energy to

Oh, absolutely, fair point. I used linux exclusively on the desktop from 95-02. Even commercially; I worked at a decent-sized digital services company in 99-02 that, from the day I started, had 2 ALR 6x6 pentium pro machines as database ser

I guess I hadn't stepped back to think about the difference between computer ethernet and switched ethernet. I _do_ remember hubs, though, so it should have occurred to me that we didn't have switching on day 1.

I worked at several x86 Linux + SPARC Solaris shops between 1999 and say 2011. Linux was always on the app servers, and Solaris on the DB servers. The Sun hardware was just better, more robust, and the machines tended to have hot-swappable
