I'm not a web developer, so maybe I'm misremembering, but wasn't there something in HTTP that let you check the last time a page changed? Scraping the poll pages every 10 minutes seems like it would cause a lot of unnecessary requests to HN

Thanks, I had never heard of geohashes before, but it sounds like they might really help with a problem I've been having lately.

The per-thread counts are a step in the right direction, but OpenMP will take care of this itself if you use the 'reduction' clause.

You can even point domains at these, so that GitHub hosts your content but it's all under your domain name.

It's valid, but less common, and that's why I specifically chose the wording "suggest a correction" instead of "correct". Spell checkers are still no substitute for actual thought.

Hey, here's a chance to invent some new terminology! I would say that Norvig's corrector is a first-order spelling corrector, since it works within the context of a single word. A second-order corrector would take into account the word befo

Maybe it's not fair to cite the work of super heroes, but Peter Norvig wrote a spelling corrector in 21 lines of Python: http://norvig.com/spell-correct.html

You could also do: kill -STOP `pidof iTunes` (I have no idea if pidof is included in OSX. It exists in Debian systems though!)

Does logic programming really count as flow control? To me, it's an entirely different paradigm, where there is no real flow at all; all statements operate simultaneously.

I get this too, generally on weekends when I don't have any obligations. I don't think I would call it depression though. There's no sadness involved. It's more like nothing seems interesting enough to motivate me to action.

What to Submit On-Topic: Anything that good hackers would find interesting. That includes more than hacking and startups. If you had to reduce it to a sentence, the answer might be: anything that gratifies one's intellectual curiosity. Off-

Somewhat off-topic: Have you heard of the Neural Engineering Framework? http://ctn.uwaterloo.ca/~cnrglab/?q=node/10 It's got a Python (well, Jython) scripting interface and can also interact with Matlab.
