reading on an an LCD really is a love it or hate it sort of thing; I love it, many people I know, who are more attached to paper books, hate it.

Yes javascript is already everywhere, but you know what is all over the place too? Android phones. If dart delivers on speed, and android supports it, there will be a very compelling reason for developers to use it.

doggcatcher is the app I use for podcasting. It is highly configurable, can do all the things you mention and a lot more, and isn't rough around the edges at all.

I use my vibrams primarily for running and have also found that my knee problems have almost completely vanished since I started running in them.

note that I'm not advocating using nodejs/coffeescript, it's just what we are going with. Personally, I prefer strongly typed languages so I'd probably look at the scalability/reliability of mono very very closely. I also like GWT a lot.

At my work, our web app is written in .NET with SQL server and we are slowly migrating away from it. Why? 1. Hiring (good) .NET programmers is hard. All of us except the founder were originally java programmers. 2. Windows is expensive. L

Software Dev for sure. The modules in the web dev stuff all look like things you can pick up along the way fairly easily.

Ideally, you should do both. You will alienate a percentage of people who prefer one over the other if you only do one no matter which one you choose.

if you DO go, consider looking into co-ops for your living arrangement. Fairly cheap and you get a pseudo family as part of the deal.

There already is a 2-tier market. Try being a 9-5er trying to get a job at google/facebook or any of the other big internet companies that only hire top caliber talent.

See my post below: a non-priv'd user can't start the java app server on a port sub-1024 unless you mess with the OS to allow it. I just double checked with my jetty install and I got a "java.net.SocketException: Permission denied".

Actually it isn't trivial for java webservers. Only root processes are allowed to use a port <=1024 by default, so you can't just change a config line in tomcat/jboss/jetty and have it work automatically. You would have to then start/

I think one major difference/hurdle of java web development and deployment is the fact that you HAVE to setup something like nginx in front of the app server or else you're working on port 8080 for everything. Or you have to know how to co

what version of jetty are you using? Last I looked, hot swapping code was a huge PITA and not an out-of-box config.

I should have put a lot more thought into who I wanted to be and how I wanted to get there when I was in highschool. I'm fairly satisfied with who I am but some more forethought would have helped quite a bit.

I favor the company that chooses the option that is right for the circumstance and for their customers (internal or external), not the one that chooses A or B dogmatically.

I hate javascript because of broser compatibility issues. Web programming is fun for me if I can stay away from them, which is why I've recently started doing all my web programming in GWT.

If clients knew there was a boxed solution available they either 1) wouldn't need you or 2) would tell you up front to use the boxed solution.
