This guy sounds like a douchebag. Is hoarding money en vogue now? It's one thing to be frugal, but it's another thing to be a greedy miser. If everyone did this, it would choke the financial markets and drive the world into stagflation. The

Glad to see GitHub get some focus. As a paying customer, I think they've let their free users degrade the service for those that finance the site.

I have a T-Mobile G1. My girlfriend has an iPhone. There is just no comparison. Hands down, the iPhone is a better handset altogether in every imaginable way. Comparing the iPhone to Android is like comparing the Mac experience to Windows.

This seems like an aimless rant. Rails (and Hibernate to my knowledge) uses SQL for exactly what he recommends: filtering, aggregation, and joining. The RDBMS is a very real and concrete concept in ActiveRecord. If you don't know SQL, it's

I hear all of these people talking about dirty cities, but have you been to anything in the south? Memphis, Atlanta, New Orleans? After a trip to the rougher areas of Memphis or New Orleans, you'd probably eat off the sidewalk in the Tender

They may have been, but I imagine it's difficult to discern the difference between legitimate traffic and a DoS attack if you've got NAS volumes mounted over the same interface. You'd need to do a more thorough network analysis.

This is surprising to me. It seems like Amazon should have dedicated ethernet (or at least a separate VLAN + higher QoS) for EBS.

Java isn't becoming irrelevant because Sun is neglecting it or plans to neglect it. Java is becoming irrelevant because even though it's a great tool, the community represents many of the things that passionate developers have come to hate.

Perl still sucks, and I wrote Perl5 code for years. It's more about the inconsistency in the way the language is implemented. Having to explicitly scope variables, the disaster than is OOP, the riddling of special cases and context-sensitiv

Yes, thank you. The moral of the story is that you ship a product first, then you tweak, improve, and refactor it once you've got a reason to!

I don't think that's the point Joel is making. At the end of the article, it really comes together. Perhaps you are too heavily focused on the specifics (unit testing, etc) instead of the overall theme. He's basically saying that while the

Good point, and the install isn't exactly as snappy as the ActiveX-based plugins such as flash. Here's a blog post that details the steps. http://rickonrails.wordpress.com/2009/09/22/chrome-frame-ain...

It would be easy enough to use ImageMagick to quantize the image to a limited color palette, create individual images for each color, trace them using POTrace, and then combine them back together. That's not to say that there wouldn't be an

Google probably has SOME connectivity they pay for, but by now they are effectively their own Tier 1 network, considering how much Internet traffic flows to their servers. They have a 2-byte ASN, which basically means they're a major backbo

Umm, it sounds like some tweaking of your ActiveRecord::Base.find calls with the ":include" parameter might improve performance by 10,000x as well.

Only by convention and common practice though. You can easily mix and match any part of the MVC as you see fit. This is where the "magic" comes in. Rails gives you a set of very sane, most-common-scenario conventions that are the basis for

S3 isn't about cheap, S3 is about reliable and scalable. Yes, it's inexpensive, compared to how complicated and expensive it would be to setup multi-site failover and support nearly unlimited scaling.
