Won't developers recoup their costs by selling software through a platform strengthened by Apple's massive infrastructure and marketing?

Based on the general sentiment in this thread, I guess the HN community doesn't want people to be able to charge money for software. For some reason I am experiencing cognitive dissonance...

Format wars have sometimes ended up with one winner, and then there's the windows precedent. I think a lot of the polarization comes from fear of one side or the other 'winning' - a fear that isn't entirely baseless.

Could it be that the human nervous system just didn't evolve to keep doing the same thing for years on end, and so our industrialized culture isn't good for us?

Generally you're probably right, but people do get stuck in jobs for real because of external constraints. A mortgage is not always one of them because it usually means you have capital to trade for your mental health. Divorce, Healthcar

I think it's a mashup of multiple startup memes. If a referent has to be singular rather than a general class in order for it to qualify as parody, then I stand corrected.

The title is parody - he's commenting on the general amount of gibberish that gets written about startups.

Who could put it together simple as an RSS feed or delicious tag? Are you suggesting I make it for myself? Which would defeat the purpose. Or are you suggesting that I hire someone else to make it?

The list is 'top grossing'. You get there by having a high sales by dollar per unit time. They put the price up and bought the app a few times. They get 70% of what they paid back. And the app is suddenly grossing the same as a $0.99 app

The irony; no support for loading music from Linux.

Interesting. I wonder if they did that and then bought it themselves a few times to juice it into the list.

Agreed - Ars is the closest thing, but it's actually a lot more tabloidy and much less technical than byte actually was.

I respectfully disagree with you. There is obviously a far higher quantity of technical 'information' on the web, but almost none of it reaches the standards of the professional writing that was done by Byte. The articles I see on the site

No - you can only redownload apps. This is because of the contracts with the content providers. Apple is apparently trying to renegotiate this at least for music, so that they can put your library in the cloud.

It has a lot of potential, but it's not quite as exciting as it sounds in reality - each app that wants to use the external display has to support it.

I've never understood why Byte magazine was shut down. There's been nothing like it. I can't imagine it not being popular in today's tech culture. I'd pay $100 or more for a year's subscription to it right now.

Why isn't weighting for volume appropriate? Sure, fewer than 54% of sites may support HTML5 video. But who cares if those sites aren't where most of the videos are? You're trying to claim that your handpicked list of sites which deliber
