Nothing you say here seems to contradict the author's position that the patent situation is making things worse for indie devs.

Absolutely. I think the criticism is that Google has credibility amongst the tech community for 'openness', which is based on shrewd PR rather than them actually behaving differently to any other large corporation. I see proponents of Goog

Depends on your definition of singleton. In java, singletons are enforced by the type system - i.e. There's no public way to make more of the object. Usually that's what people mean by 'singleton' in java. If you don't have the source and

If you're using NSUserDefaults, why bother with a SettingsManager? If the SettingsManager is an NSUserDefaults replacement for whatever reason, then it's probably fine for it to be a singleton.

Letting individual classes get settings from NSUserDefaults (which itself effectively presents a singleton) directly seems to work pretty well for me. One advantage is that the classes are then reusable in other projects because they aren't

I think you're spot on - Facebook is basically an entertainment destination. If google is trying to become the same thing, they may end up making the search experience worse. That said, it's not like there's a choice.

I think his point is that Google made + so that they can learn about people. It's designed to serve Google's need to learn about people and damage it's competitors first and foremost. Vic Gundotra is quite open about this when he talks abo

Where does this 'mean time between iPhone reboots' come from? Has someone done a study - and are you talking about stock or jailbroken? I ask because I occasionally had to reboot my original iPhone, and 3GS, but I simply haven't thought ab

Home screen apps are not running in the browser - they run in a separate process. What distinguishes a 'design bug' from 'doesn't work the way I want it to'?

I totally agree with you about the unpleasantness of ads in general, but iAds don't work like that - a static banner appears first and then if the user taps it, the interactive portion is started.

I've seen it happen twice - once just after a series A, and once after a company made it incrementally to good profitability. Both had headcounts in the 20-30 range, and still considered themselves to be startups.
