There's plenty of hosting providers that provide ruby and python and all the rest. PHP because of ubiquity, I could see holding water 7 years ago, but not now.

I make a text file per project.. and remove items as they are completed.. If the notes are more complex than that, typically it goes into the bug tracker (redmine, or similar)

if html5 video is any indication, it has to fall back to flash for browsers that don't support it, as well as encode the video in various codecs to account for different codec support (per browser)

One wonders what is he so angry about? I switched from Slackware to OS X precisely because I felt OS X did more things automatically for me. Also, If you've used slackbuilds, they are actually quite similar to homebrew, in my opinion.

I would change the design to encourage more reporting, and make it harder for bots to crawl.

The only con is that if you build buzz you have to launch reasonably soon. If you blow the deadline, then it's difficult to build buzz a second time.

Checkout http://authoringebooks.com/ it's $50, but it's by jeremy mcanally and he wrote http://www.railsupgradehandbook.com/ making $40k in a year. So I think it covers a little about what tools to use etc..

honestly, I would use sinatra.rb, and deploy to heroku, using their free version (at first). For me that's the fastest way to get a simple idea up and working.
