After a bit of searching, I think this might be a "commonly repeated but not actually true". A few people saying no, most weapons go 2d when you aim throughout the game, and a couple stay 3d throughout.

I used this at work for a codegen tool, targeting Kotlin, more C#, and our JS framework. I had a great time with it, only struggling when I was trying to get the right line breaks between items where the template had loops.
