Virtually no hobbyist would be able to compete against big financial firms' hardware and algorithms. It might be a smart move for a large high frequency trading firm to put out these sorts of tools for free. An incredibly easy to use free

I do not believe that anywhere in the article she calls you a "sexist boy"? She calls the tech industry "by and large a boy's club". And I'm not just being pedantic when I say that's not the same thing at all. Complaining about the state

The piece of insight that I think was missing from the post is this: If you can get to $10 million and still not feel secure, there's something very wrong with the way you are living your life. $10 million, with a 1% annual return on inve

If the basic argument is that apple's margin are too high, I agree completely. They are a massively profitable company; they don't need to be charging what they're charging. If the argument is that there is something immoral about them cha

With macvim I sometimes end up using cmd-c on a visually selected area, the cmd-v in the other window. It works, even if it isn't built-in. I also avoid having multiple windows open as much as possible (tabs and splits ftw) but when it do

Really smart tutoring tool. I've seen other tutorials with editable javascript examples, but I think the combination of well chosen examples, use of asserts, and nice design brings it to a whole new level.

The editors I've seen for iOS all have issues with special characters so I had been really curious to see how the emac folks would deal with that. I was pretty disappointed when I found out they didn't. The gestures were pretty cool anyway

Identifying the first place i and j are used is a start, but it doesn't really answer the question. The question is "why?", not "where did it start?" Of the explanations on the SO page, the fact that i is the first letter of index seems li

Don't get me wrong, I fall squarely on the side that Ruby's power is well worth it's danger. But let's not kid ourselves, monkey-patching Object is dangerous. In this example, exposing all of an object's methods to the web means that anyo

Depending on your point of view, this is a perfect example of either what makes ruby so amazing or so awful. I don't know of another language that gives you the power to so concisely potentially screw yourself in such a creative way.

Ruby 1.9.2 has been released since August. Was the poster confused in thinking it had just been released? Or was the poster making a point about people needing to upgrade already? some past discussion: http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id
