That's a good point. The ability to disagree well is useful. I'd rather work with someone who won't automatically rubber-stamp everything I say but instead, when he disagrees, can argue his points in a clear and well-informed way. It is

By sanity I'm assuming you mean serious horse's-head-in-the-refrigerator loopiness and not the sort of insanity that makes grown men construct trebuchets or think they can write novels. Also, I considered trustworthiness and honesty for th

Right-O! "Bluto's right. Psychotic, but absolutely right. We gotta take these bastards. Now we could do it with conventional weapons that could take years and cost millions of lives. No, I think we have to go all out. I think that this situ

According to this ( http://news.yahoo.com/s/nm/20070820/media_nm/myspace_dc_2 ) MySpace is at about 61 million active, unique users while Facebook is at about 19 million. Also MySpace users spend more time on the site than Facebook uses, w

Why did your group even decide to use .Net at all? You seem to have avoided a lot of the traps of .Net by avoiding a lot of what actually comprises .Net. Are you running on Windows servers?

Simple little websites like Facebook and Wikipedia seem to get by quite nicely with the quick and dirty PHP approach :-)

Thanks - that was a very nice and thorough response. And I quite agree with much of what you said. You don't have to use "viewstate" and flow layout is the sensible thing to do. But in actual practice .Net projects often do use viewstat

It's not completely impossible to do good work on the .Net platform. But it is very, very unlikely. .Net teaches programmers to write code to .Net, to Microsoft rules. It teaches its victims to use the excreable "viewstate" and POST when t

Someone posted a topic earlier for discussion about whether or not to publicize his startup as a "YCombinator Reject." I've been thinking lately that the act of preparing an application might be a very good exercise to focus and define your

A poorly laid-out neighborhood of shoddily-built slums? I think that's a rather good analogy for corporate IT.

I'd like to have this essay printed on bronze plaques and hand them out to everyone I ever have or will work with, or perhaps just to random people at the top of the escalator at the mall.

That line you quoted from the rejection email is just perfect. It also shows quite the opposite attitude of the average big company. Reforming corporate America seems like a lost cause. It's time to start taking over.

You're exactly right - [argh] it's not at all the traveling salesman problem. Thanks for the correction. In any case, the thesis of my post was that it's a totally solvable problem and that you could use other factors to reduce the number o

It would be quite neat to be able to do that. Ancestry.com is another site that should offer something like that... enter your family tree and then pick some random person who also has a family tree on file and show how you're related. Th

I've consulted with two medical practices on implementing EMR systems in the last few years. The systems that are now available (at least the ones I've looked at) are rather old-technology - not web-based, don't allow for patients to acces
