I upvoted you because I HOPE you're right, not because I think you are right. Managers are like cockroaches... after the nuclear apocalypse they'll be the only ones running around... trying to find underpaid teenaged business analysts to w

He has all of the virtues I dislike and none of the vices I admire. Mr. Attlee is a very modest man. Indeed he has a lot to be modest about.

+1 for Data mining, concurrency, FP. Another one: HTML 5 and related. This probably won't make as much of a splash as AJAX did a few years ago but some of the new things you will be able to do in a web browser present an opportunity to impr

I don't disagree with the comments about the triteness of this page and other articles like it. That doesn't mean it's entirely without value though. Think of it as like a financial budget: you know you're not going to hit it completely an

Charter flights fall under FAA Part 135 rules; scheduled flights are Part 121. With charter flights you don't have to put up with all of the passenger screening stuff. It's also surprisingly affordable if you are traveling with a group, e

That is a brilliant idea. I've wanted some dry-erase wallpaper http://www.walltalkers.com/ since I worked in an office that had it, but the dry-erase floor is now on my list.

That's how I read it - a Swiftian proposal to make more fortunate people think what it would be like to be in a situation (e.g. 100 pounds to live on for six weeks) where shoplifting is the best option. At least, it made me think about tha

If in testing the system you used any data which may be interpreted as belonging to the company then be very, very careful. Hopefully you haven't, but if you have then you might want to delete all traces of that data before presenting it.

Farecast had a very different UI when MS bought them. The transition to the copy of the Kayak UI happened well after Kayak rolled theirs out and also well after MS bought Farecast. The scenario/timeline you outline above is reasonable enou

This reminds me of the Kayak/Bing Travel issue from July and similar incidents before that. It's easy enough to blame some contractors at a distant outpost but the frequency with which these things happen around Microsoft certainly leads t

Another contrarian view: if Oracle does do to MySQL what Monty warns about this may accelerate interest in GPLed forks, e.g. Drizzle. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Drizzle_%28database_server%29

I remember saying, in the late '90s, shortly before I saw Google the first time, that it was probably pointless to build a search engine as Yahoo had pretty much said the last word on the subject. That was a reasonably common thought at th

So you're saying... Properly escaping queries is a bad idea because you might forget to do it and if you forget to do it then it doesn't work. Here's a funny thought, though. I remember, many years ago, doing a code review and noticing som
