Only time will tell if this is a workable solution, but at least the identification of some current systemic problems is accurate.

SpiderOak has always been an all-SSL site, for all services (including data storage and retrieval.) We've found the Erlang implementation of SSL scales more comfortably than OpenSSL. (The new Erlang implementation, available since r12, and

We just launched the SpiderOak backup and sync client for Android this morning: https://spideroak.com/blog/20101004214544-finally-here-spide... We'll be making it open source shortly.

Very nice - My wife is the graphic designer for a nonprofit that does significant fieldwork, and just spent the weekend lamenting the shortcomings of Flickr and photo database management software in general.

this detail is wrong: the tar that ships on Mac OS X does indeed support resource forks.

Yes; if you increase the hash space sufficiently, these problems go away. I don't think wide hashing has really become a standard industry practice though, because services want to pick the option that is least burdensome to end users' CPU

To my knowledge, it cannot be done in a way that addresses the privacy concern: that a court could require the storage operators to answer such questions about their customers as described in the article. If there's a way around that, I am

One of the big challenges of scaling a backup service is maximizing the upload rate from customers, so there's a strong incentive to do the de-duplication before the upload when possible. I don't wish to call anyone out specifically, but s

There are a thousand low level details in the answer to this question; I'll try to cover some of the basics. A high end vitamin tries very hard to package nutrients from actual food sources (i.e. extracts and concentrations of something you

I prefer http://winpdb.org/ (Not windows only.) The debugger runs as a full screen GUI app, which you attach via sockets to a running process, so you can easily debug stuff like FCGIs on other machines, etc.

spideroak.com has always been an all SSL site, and there are a few additional annoyances: - You need a cert for example.com, and maybe a wildcard cert for .example.com, and for any additional levels of subdomains such as *.{x,y,z,etc}.exa

You have the advantage of shipping a desktop client, which affords you a variety of interesting methods beyond what purely web based apps and browsers can do. The desktop client could even serve as a local proxy server for web/forum access.
