I have a friend who has a high position in a huge company that is Java-only. I asked him just the other day about the situation and pretty much he said there were no alternatives to Java in many sectors, especially banking. "If they make it

I'm sorry, but "Semantics" is "the study of meaning" (at least according to Wikipedia). How's that possible that "Semantically related != meaningful"?

I think the more fair comparison would be to show THE SAME random subset for each entry. I.e. same X words for all result sets. Otherwise, it might happen that a superior result would just show words that don't even have good results, while

I think the challenge implies that the only data you can use is the provided dataset. Otherwise it's just make no sense - if you pull the similarity data from other place - then where's the challenge?

robots.txt is malformed in this example: Disallow: /*/blackhole/* This line won't work even for good robots (robots.txt doesn't have wildcard characters).

Actually a good idea, but a MUCH better idea would be to automatically post a direct message to that person (from your own account or from central Idiocy account) about the problem, rather than hijacking the session and basically hacking th

I wrote my own async servers and having done that (and used Tornado), I'm back on threads :) Async is kind of cool in some cases (long polling for one), but for most cases it's pain. Right now mostly working on CherryPy's WSGI server.

Personally I'd go with simple Python WSGI app or node.js app. Actually even PHP can handle 150 reqs/sec (your load at 150 users with 1 req/s) if used as nginx+php-fpm+eaccelerator. By my measures it can actually do about 1000 reqs/sec.

I'd probably go with node.js for this task - more manageable. Twisted has a huge learning curve.

memcached doesn't do replication as far as I know. It will just have to do some requests second time. It still beats re-calculation on each request.

Why do you use AJAX to update countdown? Using AJAX for this would give you MUCH less accuracy than plain-old JavaScript with time delta of user time to server time: If you just need to time sync - you could receive server time once (rememb

Memcached? Only vertically? Horizontal scaling is built-in in all memcached clients.

Clever idea! Although I prefer Chrome Dev Tools for this task - measuring page load time of people with different connection speeds, CPUs (for rendering), browsers seems a little weird. The graph about bounce rate caught my attention. Altho

The worst (for me) current example of hover abuse comes from Google Images. Try searching for something on Google Images, then click the search field and try to refine your query. Didn't work? Well, that's because you moved the mouse away f

Ok, I've got to ask. $15K for one text? Percentage? It's THREE orders of magnitude more other than other general text writing. How can this be justified? (Kind of looks like daylight robbery to me)

How many browsers support 'document.write.to'? It uses browser-specific event. onload is fallback. I've tested the slow image (20 second delay instead of image) - no, it doesn't require loading of images, scripts fire up as soon as HTML fin

From the looks of it - it means that you have to modify external scripts in ADW, right? FIXED loading time to browser-specific DOM ready events. Don't see the need to use actual DEFER. Any reasons to do it?
