The majority of Americans do not have a college degree. You should read the article!

Dismissing an opposing view as “lacking nuance” doesn’t really add much nuance to the discussion. The fact of the matter is most Americans do not have a college degree. You can perform all the mental gymnastics you want but at the end of th

The higher education system we have is broken. We are pouring money into a system that apparently doesn’t enable graduates to pay off their loans. Your answer is to subsidize further? Colleges will continue increasing tuition and pumping ou

Yes exactly like living in a HCOL area. Why on earth should blue collar workers pay federal income tax so graduates can better afford their insane NYC or Bay Area rent? It’s regressive and does nothing to stop tuition and housing inflation.

Why we would want to subsidize more expensive lifestyles? College graduates in HCOL areas are very far down on my list of people who need government assistance.

We weren’t doing QE until 2008 and the scale of the deficit is quite a bit different. CPI is such a wack metric. It doesn’t really measure so much the value of the USD as it does “prices of certain things”.

5% annual return on an investment will take 20 years to break even regardless of the underlying instrument (or ~15 years if compounding). With bonds or equities you will either be paid the face value of that bond or still own shares that ho

Oh I think I get it. If everything is just served by Adsense then you only need to pay a single monthly bill to Adsense rather than individual sites. Fascinating idea indeed!

So this seems feasible for site that you visit frequently. But how would you handle the random one off articles? There are plenty of domains in my history that I’ve only visited like 1-2 times.

Oh I see that’s an interesting idea. But you’ll still need a way to send very small sums of money without an outrageous payment processing fee.

It’s kinda like Brave right? I wish this were a reality but it’s gonna be a tough battle. Micro transactions are a tough problem…and I definitely don’t want to have to buy some silly crypto token. You’re gonna need a team of engineers, lawy

This is insane and these people are clearly not interested in charity. They’re selling an “investment” with no legal guarantees. You don’t own anything like equity or a bond which are contracts with regulatory oversight. What’s the lifespan

My comment isn’t a hard rule or anything. Sounds like you have the opposite problem! You’re probably in the minority here. Also it’s not just the technical implementation that I’m talking about. Creating a business is hard.

It’s longer term. CPI just measures a weighted prices of a basket of goods/services. In reality, the purchasing power of the dollar moves quite a bit outside the CPI basket because people absolutely spend their capital outside that bas

I think it’s easy to miss some of the very real pain lower income folks are experiencing right now if you’re not in their bracket. Inflation causes excess capital to flow into assets, which the poor don’t have and HN commenters do. The infl

How on earth is a windfall tax supposed to reduce inflation? Adding taxes makes goods/services more expensive. You would be removing the incentive to produce more oil. Why would an energy company invest enormous amounts of time and cap

Here’s how it happens: 1. The annual congressional budget has a massive deficit every year. Our government is currently ~30T in debt. 2. In order to make up the difference between tax revenue and spending, the treasury sells bonds. 3. The c
