Oop. You're right. I overlooked that. I put about 2 minutes into the illustration and didn't think it over very much (I probably should have). I was mostly responding to TomGullen's confusion about the GP's statement, ra

And, as a couple people have pointed out, Thorium isn't even used in fusion. This author could stand to do a little more reading on the subject.

To be fair, it's not the same people on both sides of each of your examples. I suspect every politician ever will be subject to completely opposing criticism from both sides.

I think they're pushing the "picture in space" as a sort of hook to gather public interest. Large scale public interest in their projects has the potential to bring in larger funding from entities that might otherwise not be interested. Per

I think he means that this development would encourage the use of diplomacy over explosives. I initially read it the other way (diplomacy being more useful than this development).

Where does the GIL factor into this? I thought using threads in Python gives basically no gains unless all the heavy work is being done outside the interpreter. I've always gone with the multiprocessing module instead.

I remember it being something about check valves in the oxidizer pressurization system. I don't recall where I read that, but it's probably not too hard to dig up (I'm just lazy).

Wow. I had no idea the ATV was so expensive. As a side note, your comments in space-related threads are always awesome. Do you work in the industry?

The capsule's thrusters had a blockage which prevented them from maneuvering and deploying the solar panels. They managed to clear the blockage just fine.

They lock in the price. I bought 3 bitcoins for $48.48, and shortly thereafter the price jumped up by a couple dollars. 5 days later, there was a charge in my bank account for a total of $48.48.

I don't believe he actually means the OS Kernel. It's a userspace "kernel" in that it coordinates the traffic and behavior for all of the subprocesses.

It can be done on a moderately powerful GPU these days, but only to about 10x zoom (or maybe less, I don't remember) before it starts to look weird. The main problem is floating point precision (or lack thereof) causing distortion :(

Are you sure you watched the HFR version? Not all 3D showings had HFR. I think you may have only seen the regular version. HFR was really noticeable (for me, at least).

I imagine that's a factor, but it's primarily the fact that sea water is really hard on the delicate parts of the rocket due to corrosion and mineral deposits.

I still like to push the idea that my school's CS department uses: grading appointments. 40% of your grade is the code actually working, 60% is you being able to explain it to the TA.
