CPython compiles Python source code to bytecode, but it never compiles the bytecode to machine code. Instead it interprets the bytecode, reading one instruction at a time, and basically calling a giant switch statement that handles every po

Elixir has a command `mix hex.outdated` that shows every library about to be updated, and links to an auto-generated page with the source diff between the current and latest version for each. It encourages auditing changes before updating.

In theory yes, but in practice there's a big difference between ecosystems. I maintain apps in Ruby and Elixir, and as far as I can remember, all the Elixir libraries I use respect semver. Whereas with Ruby it's much more mixed.

It does sound childish, but I know women in their 30s who still speak like that. For a man it would be very strange / unusual though.

Digital goods in games have had artificial scarcity for ages. Look at the Golden Pan in TF2 for instance, which sells for thousands of dollars.

Transactions / savepoints and parallelism make a huge difference. I have an app using Ecto and PostgreSQL, and running its ~550 tests takes under 5 seconds. Almost all of them hit the DB many times. The DB is empty and each test starts

For some data e.g. users I use two Ecto schemas for the same table, one with the full data and one with a small subset (id, username, full name). This makes it really easy to load just the data that's truly needed in associations etc.

Nakagin is interesting to people who are into architecture. If you assume the same % of people in Japan and outside Japan are into architecture, naturally you'll have a lot more non-Japanese than Japanese in that group.

You can write full-blown SPAs in ClojureScript or Elm, or use the tools we're discussing here like LiveView. I've had great success with an LV app with minimal JS. The rendering is all server-side in Elixir, plus a few lines of JS

LiveView in its standard configuration does not use Redis, it uses built-in Erlang distribution. But you can use Redis if you want to or if direct connections between nodes aren't possible.

You can store state client-side. Say you have a view to edit users, with a modal dialog. A typical LiveView app will change the URL when you open the modal, so it's like /users?action=edit&user=bob. When a server goes down the

I think the Elixir DateTime API is really clean and well designed. The key was letting libraries explore the problem and surface the right interface, before baking it into the standard library. It does mean it took a long time for this to l

One use case is storing future events, as floating DateTime + location. This makes it possible to handle timezone rule changes, unlike storing a zoned DateTime on its own. Another is when you treat the timezone and datetime separately. Imag
